“great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Great hotel--clean, efficient, stylish. Very close to the Amsterdam Zuid train station and the local number 5 tram line--about a 20 minute ride to downtown Amsterdam. Friendly staff. We would definitely stay there again! Drawbacks: no gym, and the food was limited.

To the free coffee on arrival to the charging of my blackberry the Citzen M hotel in Amsterdam is fab the rooms are small but perfectly formed with enough gadgets for any techno but also very suitable for a romantic getaway. Its very central to get into town on the tram but also has a park opposite with a lovely resturant. The team of ambassodors are all very happy to help and I would have loved to stay longer.

Room Tip: They offer you a choice of sunny or garden I had a garden one which was quiet

Fantastic value. Clean, modern hotel with great bar. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful and mix some great cocktails. A bit out of town, but the number 5 tram stops outside and is only 10-15mins into the heart of the city. Very regular service runs to just after midnight.

Agree with the previous comments--hotel rooms are incredibly stylish, but a bit short on privacy, but OK if solo or for couples. Everything was very clean and housekeeping was very efficient. Bring your own lotions, face wash and other toiletries. The hotel only provides soap and a shower gel/shampoo combo. Bedding was perfect and extremely comfortable. There is no iron in the room, but the staff downstairs allowed me to use the hotel iron.

Speaking of staff, they are very friendly and helpful. The city map they give you is actually quite informative and detailed. There are computers and printers near the lobby so perfect for printing boarding passes for free. Wifi worked like a dream throughout my stay.

Canteen downstairs is convenient, but a bit overpriced and disappointing in the quality of food. Breakfast options are fine (baked stuff, fruits, coffee, etc), but the sandwiches, wraps and soups are incredibly bland. Eat elsewhere if you can.

Decent location--this was near where my conference was being held, in addition to being super close to the Zuid train station and tram stop. The park across the hotel is beautiful and safe--saw many families and kids--so a great place for a run since there is no gym in the hotel.

Also, about a 25 minute walk (shorter tram ride) to the Museum Quarter, However, there aren't that many great restaurants within a 10 minute walking distance, and the neighborhood is quiet and sedate, so don't expect a thriving scene buzzing with food and social options. There are a few eating options at the train station (Wagamama, some cafes), but again, nothing too exceptional.

In general, though, for my purpose, this was a terrific hotel and a very comfortable stay.

This budget hotel was a pleasant and modern surprise. Good for a one night stay on your own, not a place if you have a lot of luggage or travel with family. There is no real restaurant but only micro-ready food and sushi. Breakfast was very basic but totally ok. So, come here with low expectations and you will probably be very happy, like I was. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

I needed an overnight stay right at Schipohl in order to catch a train the next morning, and picked citizenM based on location and price - I'd never stayed at one of their properties before.

Reservations are online only, and that sets the scene for a thoroughly modern hotel experience. At check-in you self-serve through a kiosk PC, a very straightforward process with a helpful member of staff on hand in case you need help. Pick up an RFID luggage tag, or use one you've kept from a prior stay, and it becomes your room key after pressing it against the check-in console.

The public spaces are very nicely decorated, and there are plenty of seating areas all feeling very comfortable. Lots of iMacs provided for internet access and the in-room WiFi worked well.

Though clearly an older building, this location has been extensively remodeled and modernized - albeit in a slightly 1960's version of "modern". The room is narrow and deep, and the first surprise is that you walk through the toilet and shower to get to the bed - circular glass panels divide the spaces and provide some privacy. Bedding is minimalist being nothing more than a duvet and pillows - all of which were immaculately clean.

The bathroom space conveniently provides a UK 3 pin socket along with a US outlet, much appreciated. Although the shower and toilet arrangement seem a little funky at first they are actually very functional, with good water pressure.

My sleep was very comfortable and the room was extremely quiet, the only slight complaint being that the heating and ventilation apparently shuts down over night, so if you get cold you have to huddle under the bedding until about 6am when it comes back on again.

I'd pre-purchased breakfast and it was about what you'd expect for a continental offering, though served in a very colorful, funky space. Tea and coffee of high quality and a reasonable selection of pastry, yoghurt and such for breakfast. All the staff I encountered were very friendly, polished and professional.

Although a bit out of the central tourist area it was really easy to get around with a tram stop right next to the hotel and the Zuid train station a 5 minute walk away.

The hotel itself is fun and vibrant. There were always guests in the lobby chatting, having a drink or using the computers. The rooms are quirky and fun with the bathroom capsules and huge wall-to-wall bed. While the high-tech room is a nice idea, the functionality left something to be desired. All the room functions are controlled by a smart remote...the one in my room was not so smart and insisted on rebooting after every use so it took a few minutes to load each time I wanted to change a TV channel or open the blinds. Frustrating, but hardly a deal breaker.

I thought the food/meal prices in the hotel lobby were a bit pricey so I ate elsewhere. There's a convenience store near the Zuid station and a few restaurants there too.

All in all a good choice and decent value for money.
