“Great Funky Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2011

My wife and i stayed here for 2 nights in July whilst we went to see Take That. I can honestly say it is the most fun hotel i have stayed in. The rooms are 21st Century with the biggest bed i have ever slept in whilst staying in europe, the comfiest mattress, fluffy pillows and excellent duvet. The shower is a rainfall shower and is superb, around 40 movies on demand and all free of charge, great selection of tv channels and music playlists. I agree the rooms are probably not suited for travellers staying for longer than a few days as space is limited, but if you are travelling with hand luggage and only staying a few days then it is excellent. tram 5 stops pretty much outside the hotel and you can be in central amsterdam in around 10-12 minutes. The hotel is excellent value at 79 euros per night, some hostels in amsterdam charge around this. my only complaint is Amsterdam is so expensive you pay around 5 and a half euros for a pint of beer, thats even more expensive than London,Barcelona and New York. But the hotel is excellent.

We loved Citizen M in Glasgow, so when we decided to go to Amsterdam, we automatically booked here. Again, a great experience, right on the number 5 tram with easy access to Amsterdam Central, museums, entertainment district. The room was exactly as expected, clean, modern, smoke free and a little bit tight! Still loved the free movies and wireless. They have good breakfast options, including to-go bags! The only downside was how much more expensive this hotel was than the CitizenM in Glasgow, including a 20 euro charge for early check in. Not sure we would stay here again on our next visit to Amsterdam.

Hi “dianem11”,

Thank you for your great comments; I’m happy you stayed with us at citizenM Glasgow and now here at citizenM Amsterdam City.

Commenting about the price, our rate policy is transparent and the same throughout all our hotels, as well the early check-in fee, which applies to all properties. In Amsterdam, room night is between 79-159 EUR (while in Glasgow 59-139 GBP) – the difference is not purely the exchange rate but other factors influence, like local taxes. It works just like an airline ticket; to benefit from the lowest rate, we recommend booking in advance, or in periods with lower demand.

I wish you safe travels and hope to see you back at citizenM. Did you know we are also opening in London and NYC?

All the best,
citizenDiego

I came across this hotel some time back when I was researching on where to stay in Amsterdam.

The first thing that interest me was the shower cubicle. It's a tubular column with large overhead shower and color-changing LED lighting. Made me want to have something simliar at home. The shower comes with thoughtful details, like AM and PM shower gels so you can start and end the day on the right note. The bed was one of the best I've slept on in a hotel. The bedsheets were from Frette. Felt so nice you wouldn't want to get out of bed. Under the bed, there's a large luggage storage compartment which allows you to store your suitcase "opened up" (if you are using a typical clamshell design suitcase). The moodpad in the room is the thing you need to control every controllable device in the room, from the TV to the lights, to the blinds and A/C.

The only downside of stay here would be that it is not situated near to the museums and shopping areas, but this place has good access to trains and trams which can get you to these places in no time.

For 69 euros a night, this was a good deal. However prices have been going up, presumably due to the fact that more and more people are aware of this great place. Last check the prices have more than double to 149 euros a night. Would stay here if I go back to Amsterdam, and definitely looking forward to the opening of CitizenM in locations such as London and New York (happening really soon).

Having read a lot about Citizen M, I was looking forward to the experience - and it did not disappoint. Great design, cool concept, quirky ideas, friendly service, efficiency are all here. Check in is self service - which is perfect (why pay for a large Reception Team, for something you are quite capable of doing yourself - there is someone on hand to help if necessary). The rooms are modular and very well designed. A massive bed and two pods containing the shower and toilet. Everything is controlled by a remote - TV, blinds, lighting (which you can choose a mood), alarm etc... Downstairs there is a great self service cafe (24 hours), with friendly bar staff for drinks. There is a large selection of sandwiches and some hot meals. Breakfast is simple and very nice (great coffee). There is also a living area, with relaxing and working zones (plus free, easy to connect wi-fi throughout). The brand marketing is funky and has interesting twists. There are also great innovations, such as your room key is also a payment card. If you love travel and to experience something new - you must experience Citizen M. I love it!

We have spent three nights on this hotel and we are very pleased. Good value for money, very functional, no waste of space, perfect for technology lovers, very comfy and big bed and the staff is very helpful. I personally liked the power-rain shower and the lightning of the room. Also the movies on demand and free WiFi is always a plus.

If you are a hotel traditional sort of people and not open to new experiences please stay away of this hotel. For those who love new experiences and ways to do tourism this is your place.

Although there are some downfalls i.e. the canteen was too expensive vs. what is offering. The temperature of the room couldn't be warmer than 23ºc meaning that if it is cold for you there is no other option, not even been able to switch it off! There a light streaming of air coming from the window which is quite unpleasant.

But overall I have to say this is a great hotel, modern, cool, functional and comfortable.

The hotel is in a walking distance from the museum quarter. And there is a tram (#5) just outside the hotel which can take you to museum quarter and the city center. The tram is very frequent and runs until midnight.

The rooms are superb!! The bed!! Oww the bed!!! It is huge and super comfortable. The lights etc. is super super cute! There is a nice TV and a lot of free movie options (if you ever need).

The reception of the hotel is super chic! And the staff is very very helpful.

I spent the weekend with 10 girls at Citizen M and we loved the hotel!

First of all the location may seem a bit random but it's within easy reach of the centre (10 mins on the tram which is round the corner from the hotel) and 5 mins from the train station (World Trade Centre) which takes you to the airport for EUR 3 in 10 minutes! You might want to take a taxi to get to the airport though if you don't want to go around trying to find the hotel from the train station (although it's not hard).

The first impression is really good, you come in and use the machines to check in, someone will help you with that. The ground floor area has lots of seating and modern facilities. The canteen is open 24 hours and sells snacks more than actual meals. It's a bit pricey but if you want something it's there. They also do cocktails at the bar which is a plus! I bought breakfast from a supermarket we found in town but it's not that pricey to get something small in the morning. I wouldn't recommend paying EUR 10 for their breakfast special though as it's only juice, a croissant and yoghurt.

The hotel room is the fun part, it's got a remote control that controls the whole room. You can change the temperature, the colour of the lighting to suit your mood, control the blinds... there's playlists on the TV for when you're getting ready to go out, loads of movies to choose from and normal tv.

The shower and toilet are two separate pods, the toilet having frosted windows. The showers are completely transparent so you might feel a bit awkward taking a shower stark naked in front of your roommate (if they're not your partner!) but don't worry there's a white mesh curtain you can draw which although you can still see the outline, makes you not so exposed and it's not too bad really! The room is small though and can be difficult to manoeuvre, it's best for hand luggage sized suitcases and you'll need to be tidy otherwise you'll trip over your stuff! The bed is really comfortable and the tv is on the wall so you can watch tv and fall asleep.

Overall it's a really good hotel, and really cheap so it's worth staying there and taking the tram into the centre since hotels there are more expensive and a lot older!

Room Tip: The food is expensive so go to a supermarket nearby and pick up breakfast.
