We just returned from a lovely stay at the Petit Prince apartment in the heart of Amsterdam's Little Nine Streets boutique shopping area. Pre-arrival communication with the owner, Charles, was good. Deposit was required to guarantee the reservation, with the balance due prior to arrival. No credit cards accepted; payment was made via bank transfer (which was easy.) We were met upon arrival by both Nick and Menno, who gave us an orientation of the apartment and local area, and handled our luggage (necessary, as access to the apartment is via two tight, curving, typically old Dutch staircases.) A cheerful fire, candles, and beautiful bouquet of orange tulips greeted us. The location is SUPERB. The Anne Frank house is 3 minute walk away, while the street directly ahead of the apartment leads you to the Dam/Palace in 5-10 minutes. The apartment has a compact, yet very efficient kitchen tucked behind cabinet doors; we ordered the deluxe package, so it came stocked with wine, beer, fresh juices, fresh bread/croissants, gourmet cheeses/meats/olives, eggs, milk, bacon, coffee, tea, etc. The perishables were restocked daily. We made breakfast in the apartment most mornings, along with the occasional sandwich. Nights were spent sitting on the sofa gazing out at the canal street scene, sipping wine and enjoy tappas. The apartment is not inexpensive, but the cost translates into good value when the meal expenses saved are factored in. In addition to the gourmet delights and location/view, other positives include: wifi, safety deposit box, washer/dryer, iron, a good quality hairdryer, robes, slippers, underfloor heating and heated towel racks in the bathroom, good bed, great pillows/bed linens, umbrellas, luggage racks, dishwasher, Nespresso machine, insta-hot, pots/pans, fresh flowers, candles, gas fireplace (!!), large, working windows in both front and rear of apartment, sofabed, and all lights on dimmers for great ambience. Bathroom is very good, with soaker tub, separate shower, two sinks, and toilet tucked behind a half wall. Flat screen television, with global channels, can only be viewed from the bed. (You should be enjoying the views of Amsterdam, anyway!) Housekeeping was provided once during the week (general cleaning/change of sheets), but someone came each day to empty the trash, restock the kitchen, and freshen the flowers. Apartment has small assortment of office supplies and maps of the area tucked into a small closet. Tram stop within a two minute walk. Charles has typed up an interesting list of suggested sights, restaurant recommendations, and other tips -- very helpful. He lists the number of a taxi service that is reliable and less expensive than general cabs; they will charge a flat rate to go to the Aalsmeer flower auction, etc. We used them to go to Schiphol several times, (picking up daily rental cars for excursions outside of the city.) Don't bother bringing a car into the city -- parking is almost impossible to find, and cost prohibitive. Although we rented a car from Schiphol each time, is is less expensive - (saves the 50 Euro airport surcharge) - to rent from the car rental agencies on the Overtoom (Europe Car, among others.) The negatives are that the apartment, while generally clean, lacks attention to detail (the laundry area was atrocious, with soap powder everywhere, old slippers/towels stuck on the side of the machines, etc. The actual soap dispenser was full of gunk. Being the type A person that I am, I cleaned out the debris and wiped the top of the machines, but it needs a good, deep clean. Also, the extra linens/sheets/pillows were thrown helter skelter onto the tops of the shelves. I refolded and stacked, but who knows if it will remain that way. Some of the towels need replacing, although others were fine. No soap provided. These are minor complaints, but addressing them would make the apartment faultless. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, feeling as if we had our own little apartment in Amsterdam. Charles, Menno and Nick were kind and eager to please. We will definitely book there again, and can recommend it without hesitation.
