“Hotel Van Gogh”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

Really good value for money, clean rooms comfortable and had everything you needed. Staff were helpful and spoke many different languages felt very relaxed and safe, such a good location for museums. For the price it was better than I expected which is why I thought it would be useful to write a review.

Stayed here for a stag do last weekend and was surprised it was much nicer than I was expecting as was told it would be a hostel. It's not quite what I'd expect if I stayed in a hotel either, but It's very good for the price and location in a nice area.

Dreaded the worst staying in dorms with my fellow stags but was pleasantly surprised at the standard and comfort. Although we were told not to eat or drink in the rooms as they said they don't want to attract rats (implies they have some?!)

Continental breakfast was average -nothing special but filled a hole.

Service from front desk was quite bad, the guy in particular was anal and clearly annoyed a few guests. There was free WiFi but it took us all am hour to connect for some reason, plus we kept losing connection. In all it was very good for what I was expecting, if I was backpacking or stagging it again I'd use this place, but I wouldn't come for a romantic or even business break that's for sure.

Location in the museum quarter is convenient and within walking distance of central Amsterdam and other areas in the south part of the city. Clean room. Very steep stairway (but there is also an elevator). We arrived using bus #197 from the airport, as indicated on the hotel's web site. However, we found the bus to be inhumanely crowded at the time of day we arrived (~14:00). In fact, the first bus that came by at the airport was so full that we could not get on, and we had to wait for the next one. It too was horribly crowded, and riding packed in with our suitcases was very unpleasant. The ride back to the airport the following morning was fine, as we caught the 6:00 bus, too early for the crowds. It is more like a 5-10 minute walk from the Museumplein bus stop to the hotel, not 2 minutes, like the hotel's web page says, at least if you are carrying suitcases. Nevertheless, the hotel was a good place to stay as a stopover place for us.

The hostel in itself is well located and in a quiet neighbourhood. It does not have the hostel vibe, so no common area or kitchen. The staff were only a little bit help in recommending places to eat and have a drink. The room and ensuite to my 6 bed dorm were spotless and very new. But lacked privacy and the safe deposit boxes very old. Lockers would do the trick.
The breakfast for 5 euros was delicious and has a great variety.
Good hostel but no if you want the community feel.

Not the greatest hotel I have stayed... Our room was more of a old hotel room..now with three bunk beds (6 beds total) jammed into it. Wifi on the 5th floor was very good. The lift up and down was incredibly slow and we got stuck in it once, and the stair well is very steep. However the rooms are kept relatively clean, the bathroom is large and very nice. The staff at the front desk however were not incredibly friendly and didn't not seem to want to help and answer questions. The location of this is very good if you want to be around the cultural side of amsterdam but quite a way away from the red light district,( however it is accessible by the tram 2&5)

Room Tip: Judging by my experience in comparison to other reviews and websites, the rooms are best when you bo...

internet in rooms poor (3rd floor), lift slow, dining area good but no cooking facilities except for a microwave, some staff friendly however when information was required Re; location for buses, tours etc it seemed like it was too much effort plus the information provided was hazy at best. dorm rooms tiny 4 cupboard spaces in a 6 room dorm. expensive vending machines. also one receptionist was very patronising. no power points outside of rooms. however location was pretty good, would only stay again if nothing else available. rat poison under beds.

Firstly, we were welcomed after a horrendous train journey by very rude staff on the desk. They had no time for customers and were very ignorant. Our room was very small and difficult to move around in with 8 other people however the bathroom was spacious and modern and a good sized shower compared to other hostels.Towels were not changed daily and the breakfast wasn't very nice, we had it once then decided to go elsewhere. The hostel had a microwave however no cooker or hob which would have been useful as Amsterdam is expensive. The hostel wasn't very secure and the staff generally gave of an awful vibe.

Room Tip: SImply dont go.
