“Nice hotel, good stay but noisy single bedrooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

This place is half hotel, half hostel which is perfect if you stay with a group of students - like we did. The students felt very comfortable in the 6 or 8 bed dorms while the supervisors stayed in very small but cosy single rooms. BUT: ALL the single rooms are located next to the elevator so if you stay in one - bring earplugs! Apart from that, the room was clean, nice design and has a lovely bathroom.
The group booking was a bit chaotic, but although the staff made some mistakes, they were always kind and helpful and in the end everything turned out to be alright.
The only thing we missed was a seperate room for group meetings, for this we had to use the breakfast room which is one big room including the lobby.
Summing up: A good choice when staying in Amsterdam with a group - if you know what to expect.

Room Tip: all the single rooms are situated next to the elevator - bring earplugs!

I stayed in the hostel part - beware when looking for this place, the sign out the front just says 'Hotel Van Gogh' but this is the entrance for the hostel as well.
The 6-bed room I stayed in was clean, with towels replaced daily. It's also in a quiet part of town, but it's still close to everything. You can either get the tram into the middle of the city or walk if you have time to spare. Great location for visiting the museums as well. Very easy to get to from Centraal Station (one tram, takes about 15-20 minutes) or the airport (one bus, takes about 20 minutes).
It's not the most social hostel. The common area is just a seating area with a microwave. But the people I met were friendly. Wifi was very good in the room and in the lobby.
Only problem I had was with security, like some others have mentioned. The key to the luggage room seems to be given out to anyone who asks, and when I went to pick up my luggage from the room the door wasn't locked because someone's bag was blocking the entrance. So anyone could have gone in and taken anything from all the bags that were there.

Clean room, with an incredibly comfortable single bed. Thankfully I was traveling to travel and not stay in my room, I have never seen such a tiny room! Interestingly enough, the bathroom was a very generous size! Free Wifi terrible, I'd rather pay and have a reliable connection

We arrived in Amsterdam as the first stop on our euro trip and were checked into a room which had no spare beds. There was crap everywhere, clearly belonging to a group of boys, so we went downstairs and the girl at the front moved us into a new room with all girls. The girls were lovely and the room was decent sized. No curfew was perfect. It was in a decent location and the service was okay. I would stay there again

Room Tip: Try to get one on a lower level as if the lift is packed, then the staircase is steep and narrow and...

We found your hotel to be friendly & offer a good quality of service. The area that requires improvement is the security of the baggage room. There is no security. A person can go in there & take someone else's baggage.

In addition, the reception area/lobey needs to be cleaned up as the seating area was soiled.

The food was excellent. The room was clean. Rachel was great.

We were in Amsterdam to check out the Van Gogh Museum and thought it would be nice to stay at the Hotel Van Gogh. To begin with, the service at check-in was uncomfortable because the Hotel shares a lobby and a name with a hostel. This results in the staff treating all guests like hostel patrons, which unfortunately means they are neither polite or helpful. First, we were put in a double twin room, then after going back to the desk, we were put into a room with two twin beds pushed together. When we got ready for bed, we pulled back the comforter on the bed to find a dark stain streak in the middle of the sheet. After calling the front desk, they brought us a new sheet, but did not apologize. The next day, housekeeping did not change the sheet, but rather just made the bed up. One of the three towels the first night had a stain, and another had hair on it. In the morning, we left all three towels on the floor to be replaced. They only replaced two, and one of them was stained. We then called the front desk to request another towel, to which they replied that we had to go down to get it. When we did go downstairs to get our towel an hour or so later, a different person was working at the desk and asked "Don't you have a towel?" We then re-explained that our towel was dirty. People also smoke right outside the front door all day and night, leaving the room to frequently smell like cigarettes. Although we were really looking forward to the trip, and the stay because the hotel looked interesting, it really put a damper on the weekend. The cost is not fair considering the service or the quality. For €100+ per night and a 3-star rating, there is a certain expectation, and this was absolutely not fulfilled. Would never stay there again.
