“Not for the quiet types”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

The studio apartment we stayed in had some good points but mostly disappointing/bad.

Good:

The apartment we had had lots of space and the kitchen facilities were excellent,

Bad:
Though there was no dishwasher tablets provided, nor the opportunity to buy any from the ‘caretaker’ (aka the apathetic uni student on the ground floor).
Lacked a compendium advising where the nearest supermarket was (Albert Hein in Damrak square approx 1k east), how to use the washing machine, where to buy washing machine powder etc

The wifi didn’t work for most of the time, and our request for help was ignored, let alone any compensation.

The steps to the apartment upstairs are narrow and steep, but that is normal for the houses of that area.

The coffee machine was broken, as was the volume control on the TV remote.

There was no air-conditioning, and even on mid 20s days, the top floor got very hot (ie 26 degrees C at 8:30 in the morning). There were two portable fans though which helped a bit.

We asked for keys to the balcony so we could ventilate the area better, but we never got them. Perhaps because the balcony was not safe judging by the state of it

The water pressure in the shower was weak
Be aware before booking:

Check exactly which apartment you’ve been/will be allocated. Ours was 200 metres from the red light district on the old side, which I actively avoided in my choice, assuming it was near the office address (new side). While quiet on most nights, walking through vomit splashed cobblestones on the way to museums in the morning is not fun.

Check whether you can pay by credit card. EasytoBook travel did not indicate this. We had to unexpectedly pay cash upfront on the first night for the entire stay plus a 100 euro deposit. There is no formal receipting process either to prove we paid. We had to insist the caretaker sign our travel voucher.

In the 5 days we were there, nothing was cleaned, bar by the mouse that ate the crumbs off the floor. Mess from the previous tenants remained under the couch.

Summary: If you don’t mind slumming it a bit, then the apartment is in an excellent location for the more extroverted party types who need a comfortable bed to crash into. But if you’re not into stoning yourself into oblivion like the folks downstairs, all the annoyances add up to an unsatisfying and extortionate experience. Get a hotel room instead and eat the tasty gourmet 4 euro salads from the central station supermarket if you’re on a budget.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2009

Our 2 bedroom apartment overlooking Brouwersgracht was very comfortable, spacious and warm. With big french windows leading onto balcony with great view of canal. I would recommend this apartment to families/groups as it's more practical, spacious, comfortable, sociable and cheaper than booking 2 or more hotel rooms. The mangers/owners organised a taxi from the airport, were there to welcome us and give us tips. The only downsides were: some of the light bulbs were not working; they overlooked the need for towels and toilet paper in the second bedroom; and the cleaners were late, so the apartment was not cleaned up on arrival (but that was sorted within 2 hours with no hassle). I would go back in an instant and spend even longer there, if I could!
