“cute boutique hôtel, friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2014

We had a bad experience at the Hotel Arena in Amsterdam and last minute found Canal House. We were so happy to move to the Canal House which was so much cleaner and nicer than Hotel Arena. The rooms were nicely decorated and clean and the beds were a little soft, but overall we had a good stay. The staff was very accomodating and helpful. The room included breakfast which was very good. Excellent location of the hotel, walkable to many restaurants and shops.

The Canal House is a small hotel consisting of several connected houses with a large garden in the rear. It is located on a quiet canal, a block or two from the Ann Frank House. It is very walkable to many restaurants, shops and most attractions. Despite its facade, the rooms are ultra-modern, and somewhat quirky and are easily accessible. My only complaints are the rooms, no matter their size, lack sitting options and are somewhat dark due to low lighting and dark decor.
The price includes an ample breakfast and the hotel also serves drinks and light meals throughout the day. The biggest plus is the staff who were always friendly, helpful and accommodating. Due to the size of the hotel, they even knew us by name. We stayed four nights and used their recommendations for dinner each night - all were top notch, and they were eager to hear our feedback to pass along to other guests.
We would highly recommend the Canal House to all.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 7 which was an "exceptional" room that was very quiet and overlooked the...

My wife and I stayed at the Canal House in Amsterdam to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We found the hotel to be an excellent boutique hotel where a considerable amount of thought has been given to the design. The hotel is very close to the centre of the city, yet the hotel and its garden in particular are a very peaceful and quiet spot to chat and enjoy a cocktail.
We would certainly recommend utilising the hotel to organise your trip to Amsterdam particularly for recommending restaurants (de Belhamel was excellent and very romantic) and a dinner cruise (we would certainly support their recommendation of a dinner cruise with company Lovers for excellent food; surroundings and good value). At every instance we found the staff to be excellent; very friendly and incredibly helpful.
The hotel is not cheap but given prices in Amsterdam as a whole and the hotel's quality, we believe it was good value.

We arrived at the hotel in bright sunshine and had to rapidly adjust our eyes to the black walls and ceilings in the bar/ reception which really were impressive
Free cocktails ( sadly non alcoholic) on arrival was a nice touch.
The walk from central station took 15 mins but helped us familiarise ourselves with the surroundings.
The hotel was situated on a picturesque canal a 5 min walk from the Anne Franks house and the nine streets shopping area . The staff were very pleasant and extremely courteous . Breakfast was included but if you required anything cooked it was extra.
We had a "good" room which overlooked the very pleasant back garden patio area.
however our room was too small, the bath was in the room as was two wash basins . Thankfully the toilet was in a separate room! The room was a design exercise gone wrong, it looked every part the boutique hotel with a Bose docking system , Nespresso coffee machine etc. but totally not user friendly. We were shuffling around each other and constantly in each other's way. We only stayed for two days so it did not matter but if staying longer I would opt for the bigger rooms. There was no room to stow suitcases except side of bed.
However all the other areas ,the restaurant ,the bar, outside patio and summerhouse were very pleasant.

Room Tip: Spend the extra and get a bigger room

My boyfriend has been to Amsterdam before, and stayed at a larger hotel establishment, whereas I wanted to stay in a more boutique style hotel. Canal House was fantastic! Thoughtfully and beautifully designed, we loved every single detail. We stayed in the Great Room #5 facing the canal, and it was gorgeous. There's some street noise that comes through if you have the windows open, but we didn't mind it much. We stayed for 5 days in April 2014, and the weather was a bit chilly- but overall nice. The location is perfect for shopping, restaurants and museums. Its located in one of the hippest neighborhoods, with great boutique shopping. We walked everywhere and never felt like it was too far off from anything. It was centrally located to all the places we wanted to see / visit. Their service is phenomenal and their staff is very helpful and friendly. Everyone there speaks English, so it made things easier for us. We also had breakfast included which was your basic continental breakfast, but it was very good. When we go back to Amsterdam, Canal House will be the only place we stay. We absolutely loved it!

This hotel is in a very picturesque part of Amsterdam - the Keizergracht - and perfectly situated for seeing the main sites of the city. We enjoyed the quirkiness of the plush and rather decadent interiors. The decor is a kind of goth/glam (think black and gold) with many of the original house's features preserved. The breakfast room was particularly attractive. We chose a "great" room looking over the back which had a lovely view of the garden and mature trees. It had two sinks in the middle of the room and the bath/shower was not separate which might pose a problem to those who prefer more intimacy.... The staff were all charming and helpful - we thought it was a great hotel, if a little pricey.

Room Tip: If you don't want noise, request a garden view room.

Canal House was perfectly located for us, near all transportation and services, as well as Anne Frank House and Westertoren. The garden was lovely after a hard day's museum-going. Peaceful outdoor space is such a refresher in the summer and we certainly enjoyed our Aperol Spritzes! Rooms were cramped, but well appointed. The layout of the hotel is a puzzle: hard to negotiate the narrow, steep stairs and nearly impossible to get from one end of the hotel to the other without losing your way!
