“Close to convention center”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

Came to Amsterdam for a convention and booked this hotel for its proximity to the convention center. It's pretty far from Amsterdam's city centre if you're here for a purely leisurely visit. There is a 10-15minute walk to the tram/metro, and another 20-25 minutes into the city once you actually get onto the train. Taxi is approximately 25-30 euro to get into the city.

The hotel itself was just okay, but I was honestly expecting better from an NH property. To start, the throw on top of my bed had a large, suspicious-looking stain. I didn't bother to report it though and just threw the blanket off the bed. Also, i'm not sure if this particular to Amsterdam, but instead of one large blanket on my queen bed, there were two twin sized blankets side by side. Lastly, the room was freezing, no matter what I set the thermostat to. On the plus side, the room was spacious enough, the bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was nice.

The concierge was very sweet and helpful, but the hotel lacked certain amenities that again, i found shocking for an NH property. The exchange rate at the hotel was actually higher than the money exchanges found in the tourist areas of the city centre! They charged 6% commission for whatever you exchanged! I've typically always found good hotel chains offered a better exchange rate that the local money exchanges. Additionally, the hotel did not have any international outlet converters, which I found surprising for a hotel that is almost exclusively tailored to business people in the area for a convention.

NH Musica is a good hotel with good value for money compared to usual prices. I payed my room 130€ (breakfast included). A few points would need some adjusting, though.

This hotel is outside of the city center. You'll have to walk 10 minutes from the hotel to the nearest metro/tram station and then have a 20 minutes metro ride to get to Central Station.

The hotel's building is old and not very inspiring but the inside (including the rooms, of course) was renovated and redecorated to a nice and clear modern taste. A little more redecoration outside wouldn't hurt. The hotel street is usually quite calm.

Room size is nice even for two (end of corridor rooms are slightly smaller). Beds are OK. Lighting is well thought, except above the washbasin: hard to see what you're doing when shaving (or doing your make-up when you're a girl, I guess). The bathroom is nice and modern too.

A few nice touches: a few words that will make you smile on the "Do not disturb" sign and on the restaurant's napkins, some eco-friendly initiatives and nice hands soap, shower gel and shampoo.

On my first stay, everything was OK but on my second stay, there was a little dust on the beds, multiple black rubber marks on the floor and one of the four towels had a long stain on it. And on both occasions, no toilet brush. I suppose they want to leave that to the cleaning lady clearly, that's not very practical: imagine you booked the room for two... not nice to find an uncleaned toilet.

Wifi connection is terrrrribly slow. Never seen such a bad broadband. It was also charged at an indecent rate first time I was there but on my second stay it had since become free - which is the least you can expect from a hotel.

Reception is polite and quite professional but a bit cold - more administrative than welcoming or aiming to serve and please the customer. Staff in general could smile more and show a little more friendliness.

Both times I was there, I ordered a taxi to get to my work meeting in he morning. On my first stay, the taxi arrived 40 minutes late. On my second stay, I ordered the taxi the night before and it was still 20 minutes late. Even though on both occasions I told reception to insist that I needed the taxi to be on time, when they made reservation and later called back because I told them the taxi was late, they didn't seem to really care or to tell the taxi company on the phone that they should try to be on time.

On my second stay, a group of costumers decided to have a long high tone conversation in front of the hotel at 1:00 AM. Reception didn't seem to care that it woke me and a few other customers up. In the morning, street-workers started unpacking paving stones at 6:45 AM and I could hear it all. It's quite lucky that the street is usually calm, but soundproofing from the outside could probably be optimised.

The hotel's restaurant, Sinfonia, is not much of a success. Service is professional but very slow. At one point, there was no waiter in the room for 15 minutes. There is very little choice on the menu. Food is quite good but served in extremely small portions and very expensive. It's the only time in my life I had a three-course menu and left with my stomach still growling with hunger.

There are a few restaurants at a 15-minute walking radius, so I strongly advise you to try them, as I did on my second stay.

Breakfast buffet is served in the restaurant and offers a wide choice of alright food. The buffet is set around a narrow passage so you have to watch other customers if you don't want to bump into them or their plates.

A few improvements to make as mentionned above and this hotel could easily deserve a "very good" instead of an "average".

Room Tip: End-of-corridor rooms are a little smaller

I'm going to keep this very short and sweet.
Nice hotel in bad location.
Rooms were modern, nice, large enough.
Staff was friendy, helpful, funny, they even kept the bar open for us a few nights.
But it's a good 15min from the city by taxi which isn't cheap in holland.

I have had excellent experiences at many NH properties in the Amsterdam area, and while NH Musica is outside the central city area (10 minute walk to train, approx 15 min train ride to central Amsterdam), it proved to be one of the best local bases I've found. At the time I stayed there was a promotion offering prices well below the norm, which definately influenced my opinion, but the hotel in general was in great shape and I will probably stay there again instead of more central locations.

While many NHs are obviously remodeled older properties, Musica is a very new building with bright surroundings in like-new condition. I found the restaurant's "tapas" (often a signal for tiny, overpriced tidbits throughout Europe) to be one of the very best food deals in the Netherlands, good portions, good prices.

If you want the Amsterdam experience right outside your door or window, the Musica is not for you. If you like to rent/ride bikes outside the heavily populated main metro area, it's a great location. Wifi was free even before the company's "free wifi" makeover, and the spa, though small, was decently equipped (treadmill, bike, free weights) enough for a fair workout/sauna session. Breakfast buffet very good considering average area market/prices.

Prices often vary due to demand, and from what I've seen, NH Music is more and more in demand. NH Musica is near a busy corporate/convention area of the city and the place was full the weekend I was there. Some of the best background/lobby music (classic US blues/jazz/rock) I've ever heard in a hotel. Smoking note: they really mean no smoking in rooms, the windows don't open.

It looks uninspiring, as it is renovated building. But it certainly inspire your wallet, as you can hardly find better hotel in terms of value.

When most of the hotels in Amsterdam are either too much expensive (decent ones) or filthy dirty (cheap ones) or way too small rooms (reasonable ones), this one ticks all the boxes.

The only drawback would be its accesability, as it is around 10 minutes walk from the nearest tram station.

Other than that, very neat, tidy and spacious room, good breakfast, nice service make this hotel quite a pick.

Stayed here for 4 nights in July 2012, on a business trip. The hotel was chosen by our hosts, due to proximity to the meeting place. For the price they ask, NH Musica is simply not enough. If you come to Amsterdam as a tourist you can forget it, the hotel is very far away from the city center (14 metro stations plus a 10 to 15 minutes walk). Nothing happens in the neighborhood, there are no restaurants or cafes, it is a residential area in a suburb of Amsterdam. On the positive side, this means it is also quiet in the evenings.
My room was at the end of the corridor, a bit smaller than the one of my colleague right along the corridor. It was clean, but basic. I found the bed uncomfortable, but maybe that's just me, so I am not considering it as a weak point. The air conditioning is indeed noisy when on. When off, the room tends to get chilly during the night, even in the summer (summer by Amsterdam standards). The bathroom was ok, well equipped and refurbished.
Breakfast was included in the room price, so I can't say if it worth's the money. It surely offers plenty of choices, but it does not impress on quality. It is again average.
In conclusion, the hotel may be a choice if you need to be in the southern part of the city. But then again, there are plenty of other options in the same area, so do your research before you book.

Overal a good hotel especially for what you pay. Nice rooms modern styling, very nice lights cleverly thougt out, Good bathroom. The breakfast was one off the best ive had, lots of fruit, but also vegetables and bacon and eggs.

I had a few details wich show that the hotel can be a lot better.
Why isnt my minibar stocked ? And if i want to have it stocked i have to pay 5 euro service charge + 3 euro for a coke !

There is no place in the hotel where you can buy a candy bar. Called the reception asked if they had a mars or a snickers, they thold me i can walk to the grocery store nearby ?!.

I had an executive room wich ment i get free wireless internet, wich was the slowest i ever had in a hotel in my live, simple news sites took minutes to load, was like going back to the 90s, my phone has faster internet and thats 3G.

The last time they descaled the showerhead was when they opend the hotel, i just feel sorry for the cleaners because the water was all over the place.

The kettle hardly fits in the sink so if you wanna fill it up its hard not to make the electrical parts wet.

The breakfast staff can be a lot nicer especially if you travel alone its always good to make small talk.

Overall good experience would comeback but not in the executive room. becuase that internet is ZZZZZlooww.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have a bath, so ask for one if you want to.
