We just got back from Amsterdam to visit a friend - and specifically to stay in this hotel. I love beautiful design and wanted to visit as soon as I heard about it. I was happily surprised how much attention has been spent on each and every detail.
It is quite new - both in concept and build. It's an upscale pre-fab design that is compact yet efficient, beautiful, and best of all affordable.
Concerns of mine were getting to inner city Amsterdam since it is near the airport, however there is a direct train that takes 15 minutes and costs about 7 euros for 2 adults. It was not a problem traveling back and forth. I would gladly do so again.
Getting to the hotel is easy - there is a covered walk way leading to the hotel. (If you arrive late like we did walk to the right out of the front of the airport and you'll soon see it).
The builders and designers went all out with the Eames chairs in the lobby, Vitra design elements, apple computers, design books lining the shelves, and the self check in (and cute / functional room keys that double as luggage tag when you've finished your stay) are wonderful.
Best of all are the rooms. We had a view overlooking the runway of the airport, which was unique. Even being so close there was absolutely no problem with noise. There were two types of blinds. Make sure you close the thicker one if you don't want to get woken up by the sun in the morning.
Another nice benefit is that the movies in the rooms are free with tons of variety. There were also many English speaking channels.
The personalization of the rooms is very special. You can adjust the temperature (Yes - even cool air conditioning which is a rarity!), mood lighting, music, etc. with a Philips computer that works similarly to an ipod touch. My husband is already telling me we need to have one ourselves.
The beds are enormous and very comfortable. I loved that they don't have awful flat European style pillows. It was a perfect place to relax and we really looked forward to coming back at the end of each day.
As for the 'bathroom' the pod doors slide closed and there is also a curtain to close if you need more privacy. Make sure the shower doors are closed completely or the shower will not function. It has both a rain overhead and hand held shower. Be cautious of where you put things like a razor - mine fell on the side of the circle plate where the water drains, although I could get it out.
This hotel is sexy, sophisticated, and very design oriented. I'm already looking forward to hearing where the next one will be built.
Design aficionados - this is highly recommended!
