“Fantastic place for student group or young budget travelers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2011 via mobile

My college student group stayed here in June 2010 and I was extremely happy with BackStage. The guy at the front desk could not have been more awesome and helpful. If I ran a hotel I would hire him in a heartbeat. The breakfast buffet was nicely done. The students were impressed that the management lets you play the musical instruments on the walls. The place is filled with cool rock and roll art and mementos. Rooms are fine and great value. And location is excellent, on a canal a block off Leidseplein with shops, restaurants, bars. Five minute short walk to Museumplein. Best value I have found for student group, great location and service. We will be back!

This hotel has a good location near a lot of bars, restaurants, and shops. As other reviewers have indicated, beware of the stairs here! They are steep and small, making them extremely hard to navigate with bags. However, once we arrived at it, our room was clean and bigger than in other budget hotels we stayed in in Europe. The staff was friendly and helpful, and overall we had a great stay here.

We enjoyed this hotel very much. The breakfast in the morning was also worth the extra money and the rooms were clean and comfortable.

The only positive at Backstage Hotel Amsterdam was its location (it's just a short walk from Leidseplein, the square with the bars). But location in Amsterdam is a relative thing, as we discovered after renting bikes; you can easily move around the city with them: fast, cheap, green and fun way to discover the city. Unforunatley, I can't say anything positive other then that about this hostel-like hotel. The bathroom door was broken, the floor looked really dirty and used, as the rest of place. Wouldn't stay here again....

positive points: very good location, next to a canal, in central location and next to all main atractions, is next to many tram stops and is 8 min by tram to central station free internet computer, confortable room with a safe, reasonable price for the city
negative points: expensive breakfast (6,5 euros), don’t give free maps of the city, a bit noisy
I stayed there to nights and they told me that I had to change of room on the second night and didn’t tell me the reason for that, it wouldn’t be a disturb if I didn’t discover on the second night that the TV of the room didn’t work

I stayed in a single occupancy room in July 2011.

The room was the smallest I have ever stayed in. Just enough room for a small bed, a small wash basin and stool. The bed was short and sunk in the middle which meant I had a very uncomfortable night's sleep. Adding to this, the "Hotel" is in a busy part of town near a fairly major road with alot of traffic and pedestrians at all hours. The walls are thin and you can hear the comings and goings of the other guests throughout the night.

The toilet and showers were shared and located in the hall and were extremely small - it was difficult to fit inside and close the door! The shower and toilet did not appear particularly clean either.

The building itself is old and the interior has a very "knocked around" feel about it. More like a very average hostel rather than a Hotel. Except they charge high hotel rates!

The one redeeming feature is the "Hotel's" location. Easy walking distance to most touristy places in Amsterdam. I didn't need to take trams, I walked everywhere. Nevertheless, there are hundreds of hotels in Amsterdam, many with good, if not better, locations.

I would not recommend this hotel to family and friends. Even if you are happy to stay in hostel style accommodation, go elsewhere to get a better rate. This place is very overpriced for what it is.

My husband and I, plus two friends of ours (a couple) stayed in this hotel for 4 nights. The rooms are really stylish w/comfortable beds and clean bathrooms. Our room was on the second floor which was OK but unfortunately our friends room was on the basement which was a little noisy. The hotel staff is really nice and helpful.
The location is great, next to all the big attractions of the city, 2 minutes walking distance from Leidsplein Square. Definitely a great choice when visiting Amsterdam.
Ps. If needed, do book a taxi in advance (the hotel staff will do this for you) for picking up.
