“Our 5 night stay - May 2013”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

The POSITIVES
PRICE, LOCATION,(entrance is next to a canal, close to a food market, a LARGE open market area with ALL KINDS of items, trams/buses within a few minutes walking,a friendly bi-lingual+ staff, plenty of hot water, a sink in the sleeping area, a large (narrow) window, free wi-fi, and a nice flat screen tv -w/programs in English, Dutch and German when we were there. Also, we got a DAILY cleaning of our room. NICE surprise! :) Yeah!

The Negatives....NARROW rooms w/ very small beds, NARROW & STEEP steps and staircase- a real work out for this senior!)

It had the smallest hotel bathroom area I've ever been in to use a toilet.
(Hint- It was just easier to keep the door open! (LOL)
It was A BRIGHT citron color that made me smile. :)

All in all...the +'s outnumbered the -'s for us, and we will stay there again I'm sure, although we WILL try for a LOWER FLOOR next time!

Once we got settled, we quickly got our bearings and enjoyed the proximity to tram & bus lines
& the MANY adventures that awaited us in such a WONDERFUL wonderful city!!!!

I'd compare this (somewhat) to a choice you'd make when booking a cruise. If you want a luxury suite or balcony rather than saving $ by booking an inside cabin..you would not want to
stay @ the Iris...but if you can enjoy (or make due) with a BASIC place to 'hang your hat," shower, do your e-mails, catch up on some news and shows....I'd recommend it for the price.

(We DO cruise a lot and we have gone both the 'expensive & the less expensive routes' and enjoyed both!...really! ) We have just started booking inside cabins and using the $ saved doing that & then using the $ on extended stays in NEW cities etc all over the world.
For us, it's a GREAT trade off & it's working for us, but it might NOT be for you.
(We still splurge sometime...depending on the situation.)

Our cost @ the Iris with all taxes etc was about $700 for 5 nights (without breakfast.)
(My son had stayed at the Hilton(w/canal view) in Amsterdam a month earlier & loved it.) We're happy for him, but I'd rather take 2 side trips to other cities than to pay the price of the Hilton for a week...but that's just me.)
I would not want to book this for my honeymoon or something special to something like that...but
for a 'general stay' in a safe area...yep...I'd do this again for the price.

Hope this helps you a bit ...it's hard NOT to ENJOY a stay in Amsterdam. It's just SO beautiful & wonderful!!!! (We need to stay at least another 5 days though to get to more museums etc.)

Room Tip: Book early for best rates & to secure a "LOWER room" if steep stairs are an issue...

On arriving at Hotel Iris we were pleasantly surprised at how well located it was and the outside facade was well maintained. Unfortunately, this did not follow through to the interior. I know that this is a budget hotel but it doesn't have to have threadbare carpets, dirty paintwork, water stained ceilings or minute rooms not suitable for two people, does it??? The price actually wasn't all that budget either!! Although, it was the cheapest place we found in Amsterdam.
Why have they bothered to put flat screen TVs in the rooms?? I would have preferred better decoration!! The TVs were placed far too high to make them comfortable to watch.
I was travelling with a friend and asked for a room with separate beds but I given the smallest room in the hotel with a double bed. Even a couple very much in love would have found the room claustrophobic!! The manager did agree to move us the following day but said he had misinterpreted my email. We spent a restless night trying not to steal the covers from each other, sleeping like perching birds!!
We were moved to another room the following day which did have two single beds and a bathroom. It was very clean and comfortable but again very small. We are not big people but we did find ourselves taking it in turns to move around the room.
My advice would be see a couple of rooms before making a decision or send an email before and be specific. It probably more suited to the younger traveller.
To the hotel I would say refurbish asap. It is a beautiful building with lots of potential.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 3 which was very small with a double bed only suitable for couples. We were moved...

I travel very often and this is the worst hotel I ve ever been !
we got a dirty8 m2 room (2 m wide), 1 bed, one tv, one bathroom.
Walls are so thin, you can talk with your neighbours
You need to queue for the low- quality breakfast
There were painting the walls so we need to take care for our clothes.
If you pay 30 € for this, then it is ok...but we paid 240€ for one night!!!!
Do not go there, it will save your holidays!!!!!

Friendly staff - but by far too much noisy due to the walls. After the first 4 hours we asked for a room change due to the noise and we were friendly re-directed to hotel Max (same owner) - 50 m from hotel Iris.
Both hotels are rather low standard - very small rooms with tiny beds and also not clean bath rooms. From the pricing level Iris/Max is rather too high for the provided standard but for the extremly high price level at Amsterdam it is acceptable. Breakfast is served only at Iris so guests from Max have to come over every morning. Breakfast offering is ok but they missed to clean the tables so the guests have to make it by themselves.

friendly staff, good service, great breakfast and clean room, however room was really small and cold could be heated better. would stay again for short stay though as good facilities for such a low price.
