PRICE, LOCATION,(entrance is next to a canal, close to a food market, a LARGE open market area with ALL KINDS of items, trams/buses within a few minutes walking,a friendly bi-lingual+ staff, plenty of hot water, a sink in the sleeping area, a large (narrow) window, free wi-fi, and a nice flat screen tv -w/programs in English, Dutch and German when we were there. Also, we got a DAILY cleaning of our room. NICE surprise! :) Yeah!
The Negatives....NARROW rooms w/ very small beds, NARROW & STEEP steps and staircase- a real work out for this senior!)
It had the smallest hotel bathroom area I've ever been in to use a toilet.
(Hint- It was just easier to keep the door open! (LOL)
It was A BRIGHT citron color that made me smile. :)
All in all...the +'s outnumbered the -'s for us, and we will stay there again I'm sure, although we WILL try for a LOWER FLOOR next time!
Once we got settled, we quickly got our bearings and enjoyed the proximity to tram & bus lines
& the MANY adventures that awaited us in such a WONDERFUL wonderful city!!!!
I'd compare this (somewhat) to a choice you'd make when booking a cruise. If you want a luxury suite or balcony rather than saving $ by booking an inside cabin..you would not want to
stay @ the Iris...but if you can enjoy (or make due) with a BASIC place to 'hang your hat," shower, do your e-mails, catch up on some news and shows....I'd recommend it for the price.
(We DO cruise a lot and we have gone both the 'expensive & the less expensive routes' and enjoyed both!...really! ) We have just started booking inside cabins and using the $ saved doing that & then using the $ on extended stays in NEW cities etc all over the world.
For us, it's a GREAT trade off & it's working for us, but it might NOT be for you.
(We still splurge sometime...depending on the situation.)
Our cost @ the Iris with all taxes etc was about $700 for 5 nights (without breakfast.)
(My son had stayed at the Hilton(w/canal view) in Amsterdam a month earlier & loved it.) We're happy for him, but I'd rather take 2 side trips to other cities than to pay the price of the Hilton for a week...but that's just me.)
I would not want to book this for my honeymoon or something special to something like that...but
for a 'general stay' in a safe area...yep...I'd do this again for the price.
Hope this helps you a bit ...it's hard NOT to ENJOY a stay in Amsterdam. It's just SO beautiful & wonderful!!!! (We need to stay at least another 5 days though to get to more museums etc.)
