“Amazing price/quality ratio, with some weirdness”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2011

I've been at the Blue Square for three weeks on business, leaving for weekends only and then back on Sundays, and my experience is largely positive.
First thing, this hotel delivers an overall 4-stars experience at 3-stars price if you catch the right offer; it is well served by public transportation; it has a strict non-smoking policy; and it offers free wireless connectivity, which is a huge plus (although signal may become weak and spotty at times in some rooms). Keep in mind the surroundings are not exciting (to say the least).
I've been in different rooms and they were all spacious, comfortable and very quiet; south wing may be noisier due to road traffic, and those featuring big windows require some extra heating (just crank it up a little).
I've had some weird moments too. At checkin time on a Sunday evening I've once been given a room that smelled like an entire army had been smoking inside it all day long, and I've had it changed promptly on request. Later the same week I entered my room in late afternoon only to find out someone had been smoking inside it (!), again had to report to the manager who immediately offered to change it or have it cleaned with a spray (I chose the latter and it worked); still have to understand who the smoker was... I can only assume it's been the chamber maid. And lastly I've been given a room where climate control was broken (fixed the day after) and the desk had no chair (brought immediately on request).
I have to underline the staff has always been helpful and nice while solving those minor issues. Albeit not perfect, this hotel can't possibly be beaten thanks to its outstanding price/quality ratio.

We stayed here while on a Contiki Tour. Our room had 3 beds, 2 singles pushed together and then 1 single by itself. It was a very nice/ modern spacious room with a view of the river. The bathroom was fairly spacious and newer!

The buffet here was good!! (ex. chicken, meatballs, fries, pasta, salad, bread) Breakfast is included. (fruit, toast, tomatoes, lettuce, meats, cheese - your typical european breakfast spread)

There was a safe in our room (where you can program our own code)

There were elevetors and had 1 computer you could use in the lobby with internet.

Only a few minutes from downtown/ red light district. We took a cab back to the hotel after our evening out and it was approx. $10 Euro from the red light district.

Stayed here for a few nights. Spotlessly clean warm room. Easy to jump on a tram into town. Plenty of shops, restaurants close to hotel. All in all a nice place to stay.

Stayed 3 nights in this hotel. The rooms are very spacious, the staff is extremely helpful. The location is ok, convienient to get into the city center with tram. Free WiFi is fast and easy access. My room was very dark and the wardrobe door seemed dirty, but bathroom was cleaned and the floor, lining etc also. You could also park under the hotel, but have to be paid for. Have to be sad, it is a scraffy old hotel and found the price overrated. (as it is mainly in Amsterdam)

I came to this hotel at the last stop of our tour. It was the best hotel we had stayed at. the rooms were great the beds were so comfortable. Each room had a coffee maker with free coffee/tea/hot chocolate. The hotel staff was great they were very helpful with figuring out the tram. (streetcar). The hotel lobby and decor is great and in the lobby there was free internet.
The location wasnt the best but a tram stop was jsut around the corner so once you figure out how to get around it is great!.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2010

After reading previous reviews, I was worried that I had booked the wrong place to stay but on arrival (6 a.m.) we received a warm welcome, all the staff were very helpful and the room was spacious. The beds are sooooo comfortable with decent pillows. Bathroom clean and also spacious. Breakfast was your usual buffet style and again no complaints. No minibar in room and bring your own toothbrush and paste. The location for an affordable hotel in Amsterdam was great. 15 minutes by bus into Central Amsterdam and that was driving on icey roads, and 20 to 30 minutes by tram, both tram and bus stops were an easy walk from hotel and we purchased 72 hours (15.50 euro) travel cards which made getting on and off a breeze. Shopping within the vicinity of the hotel for meals, snacks and other essentials no problem, there is an ATM near the trams/bus stop. Aldi foodmart is 2 minute walk from hotel and an outdoor market (weather permitting) 1 minute walk. Free internet WiFi throughout the hotel. Just one thing, if you really can't do without smoking in your room, then perhaps look for another hotel. This hotel IS totally non-smoking. There is a smoking area outside the hotel.

This is a reasonable hotel with worst staff at the reception!!! Beaware of getting ripped off while checking out.. Ask them clearly about the charges prior to signing the papers or handing over your credit card details.
