“Comfy bed, central, clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

We stayed for 2 nights on a team building (spouse invited) event and it was lovely. The bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was clean with provided hair dryer. Breakfast was not too bad, there was smoked salmon, selection of cheese, ham, rolls and my favourite was their croissants, it was as good as the ones I had in Denmark.

The only weird part was there was juice, tea, coffee, milk but no water provided, I have to specifically ask for it on both days.

We slept ok but because we were allocated at the room facing the disposal area, we could hear the garbage truck coming in early in the morning. There was no fridge in our room.

Room Tip: Ask for higher rooms, we were on the first floor and didn't get much of a view.

Stayed at the Grand Hotel on the 16th of December for one night to attend a concert.

The hotel is excellent and very cozy,it is central for everything and all of the sights of Alkmaar.

My room was on the top floor and very comfortable, all mod cons present, very nice, had a
good quality sleep,nice and quiet.

The breakfast was great and plenty of it.

The staff were excellent and very helpful in every way.

Overall a great stay and would return.

After all the complaints about overbooking, I dared to book this hotel. It was a mistake! On the day of arrival at 4pm, i.e. after the check-in time, I got a phone call that the hotel doesn't have a room for us. As can be seen from the posts here and as we learned later, that happends very frequently. BTW, we had a "guaranteed" booking!

Room Tip: Just don't go there. Go to the Hotel het Oude Raadhuis, Dorpsstraat 65, Castricum 1901 EJ, Niede...

Stayed here on business for four nights in room 203 - top of the hotel facing the back and side so the room is away from most of the road noise as per some previous reports. Room was very spacious with a high ceiling so it was light and airy. One large window and a large Velux type window each had blinds so at night the room was dark enabling sleep. However there are local churches that have bell towers that ring each quarter hour - 24 hours a day. At dead of night you can just about hear this, so light sleepers may need to be aware.

My room was serviced each day - bin emptied, towels changed and bed made up, though linen not changed every day (no problem). TV channels have BBC1 & 2 with some foreign channels showing US tv with sub-titles. Wi-Fi access varied in my room from poor signal to none at all, though downstairs in the bar area the signal is strong. There are no tea and coffee making facilities in the room.

Breakfast is typically as you expect on the continent with something to suit all tastes. I ate in the restaurant and the food is of high quality. There are so many other restaurants all within a short walk so there should be something for everyone from every continent.

Parking can be difficult as there appear to be strict rules in the town so beware.

The staff are all very friendly - everyone I met spoke good English which puts me to shame.

Recommended.

I stayed with colleagues at the grand hotel on weds 12th sept, the staff were quite friendly and
the rooms we had were nicely unusual with the beams of the roof passing thru the room.
The decor was good and the rooms are a good size.
The dining room was pleasant, I would recommend it as the location is very central and quiet

Room Tip: we stayed on the top floor quirky but nice rooms would recommend them

I stayed in this hotel once a month for virtually the past year which working in Holland and each time we returned to the hotel we were treated like old friends returning.

I even stayed in the honeymoon suite, another room had a sunken bath, with another a sauna in the room and each room was clean and welcoming. The rooms at the front of the hotel are noisy in the mornings ranging from seagulls ripping apart the bags of food in the street to the sound of traffic which was the only downside to what was always an enjoyable stay.

The breakfast is a continental style but the coffee was hot, strong and helped shake the cobwebs of sleep from the brain which is the way I like it in the mornings.

If you are looking for a hotel to stay in Alkmaar then look no further, this is minutes from the centre and the best hotel for exploring the city and beyond.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel

We had a comfortable yet smart room at back of hotel. Quiet. I loved all the candles on tables in restaurant and on the stairs, which gave a good atmosphere. Helpful staff. A good choice and great location.
