“Topnotch! All you want to know about textiles and more!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

An eye opener, well worth a detour! I learned a lot about the blanket making process/industry - involving collecting and treating wool and huge and very noisy weaving looms, resulting in lovely coloured blankets. Men were weavers, women were spinning. Seems global division of labour? Now it's all computerized.

To offset the past, there was a lovely exhibit of contemporary wall hangings and of damask weaving. The latter is accompanied by an audio tour providing information about the designs woven into the fabrics which tell stories of war and peace and more! Another eye opener!

Since the 1960s using textiles in art also interests men, happy to report. The audio tour is very informative, adapting eye to new(er) contexts.

Warmly recommended!

“Many ways of looking at textiles!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

A nice peek into Tilburg's textile past as well as future! Great exhibitions showing the looms, and giving a taste of the processes behind making Damask cloth. I love to see the old machines, the processes, materials, wound together (no pun intended) with the historical context. In addition to the museum, lovely cafe, and amazing giftshop (where they DID take a swipe/US credit card...THANKS), they have both a TextielLab and a second gift shop on the grounds. In the second gift shop they work with handicapped people to make some stunning fiber art! Great place to buy some unique items. The Textiel Lab is a place where artists can come collaborate with the experts to realize some amazing projects! You can see artists at work using both older technology (hand making ribbon) and newer technology (digital printing on fabric). They even have a bicycle powered loom! How Dutch! Some of the results of these collaborations can be purchased at the main gift shop...which I did. Great museum for any interest, one of my favorite things to do in Netherlands!

Great machines, impressive fabrics, arts and crafts, nice little restaurant. We spent two and half hour inside.
