The origins of the church date back to the 13th century with the current gothic style completed early 16th century. Through the ages the church and its tower were damaged a number of times as so many churches around the country. When taken over by the Protestants early 17th century it suffered from neglect.
There were a number of restoration attempts since the 19th century with the most recent and successful completed in 2010 at a cost of more than 48 million euro.
The result of this last restoration is stunning both inside and outside.
You will be amazed by the beautiful painted ceiling and other craftsmanship. There are beautiful details everywhere so take your time. And look for the angel with the mobile phone with one button “God” Something funny the craftsmen allowed themselves.
Also worth noting when you leave the church is the special stained glass window over the exit doors made by contemporary artist Marc Mulders.
