“Wonderful hotel in an old Church and Cloister”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

Great adaptation of religious building into design hotel. Design furniture does not always equal comfort, but I loved the result. Friendly staff, ver helpful. Great breakfast, central location

A converted monastery with a contemporary makeover. A stunning entrance
and interior on the ground floor. Enter by way of a floor-lit tunnel of copper
which comes out into the old church. There is a bar, restaurant on stilts and glass lift, giving an impressive presence in such a huge space.
Reception & car valet staff were most welcoming and very helpful. Parking is expensive, but this seems common on the continent. It does offer peace of mind though. We stayed for 2 nights and I'm not sure if I'd pay for more than that. There's a public car park about a 3 minute drive away under the
Vrijthof Square, which i suspect would be cheaper.
we had a standard deluxe room (204) which was comfortable and spacious.
The bed was very comfortable -single duvets on a double bed so no battles for cover! However, in my view it was in the wrong place in the room. This is were some of the irritations of the hotel creep in as design seems to take priority over practicality. I must admit I'm a stickler for practicality.
The room is effectively in the attic space, so one or two beams cut across from wall to ceiling.
If you slept on the left-hand side of the bed as you look at it, and got up in the night, you would have to try to avoid one of the beams to get to the bathroom - or get out and back in at the bottom of the bed.
By moving the bed to the opposite wall this can be avoided. rearranging the rest of the furniture wouldn't cause too much of a problem, though sitings of electrical points might.
You enter the room with a short corridor to the bedroom in front of you.
As you open the door to the room there is a small walk-in wardrobe immediately to your left. If the door to that is not closed flat, you whack it opening the door into the room.
At the end of the corridor on the right is a toilet - no sink - with an opaque glass door. I've seen reviews which were not happy with the glass doors, but all you can see is a shadow.
You enter the bedroom through a clear glass door and to the left is the bathroom with another opaque glass door. There is a large, deep bath,
two washbasins and a very pleasant separate shower.
So, if you want to wash your hands after going to the toilet you have to open three doors to do so. Had there been a single washbasin a toilet
could easily have fit into the bathroom - or of course a sink in the toilet would have helped.
We tried the restaurant on one night. The food was very good, but my main course was what I'd describe as starter size. Dessert very good. We had ordered 2 main courses and one dessert. It took 2 hours 15 mins to finish the meal; needless to say we didn't stay for coffee.Service was extremely slow, yet there was only about 12 patrons max. i nearly walked out at one point. We didn't eat there the following night!
All-in-all though I would recommend this hotel. If they could transfer the good service from reception staff across to the restaurant, this would get five stars.

Room Tip: Check with staff about quiet rooms. It's not in a very busy area so I'd be surprised if many...

It was a treat to be able to stay in this old church now repurposed into a modern design hotel. Friendly staff, really nice architecture (hotel within a church, looks like it could be removed were the church to require reconsecration!). Overall, a very nice stay altogether, perfect location, good price. Would recommend this to anyone.

The location and setting of this hotel are great (parking garage is secure and very nearby). The service was very good. We were upgraded to a prestige room, which was a great gesture. Unfortunately we both thought the room was a bit of a disappointment. It looks like they tried saving money on the furniture. It looked a bit cheapy cheap (especially the sofa and chair in the room). A real shame because the actual church/ building is beautiful. Breakfast is way too expensive! The bar is nice and i recommend going here for a drink. Overall we had a very pleasant stay, but I don't think we will stay here again.

Room Tip: I don't think it is worth paying all that money for a prestige room.

Dear THGeneva,

Thank you very much for reviewing your stay with us. All rooms are individually designed and have different furniture. Which is designed by world famous designers like Philippe Starck and Le Corbusier.

Thank you very much for the nice comments about our bar.

Kind regards,

Kruisheren Hotel is quite unique. A 15th Century church and monastery have been adapted into a hotel with an ingenious architectural adaptation. The rooms are normal, however, the common areas are amazing. The front-desk and bar staff are quite good. We enjoyed breakfast but could have had a little more attentive wait staff. Highly recommend.

I definitely understand why this hotel is ranked #1 hotel in Maastricht.
Let’s start with the pro’s:
The building is magnificent, both inside as outside. The way they mixed the authenticity of the cloister with the modern design is just superbe.
Already when making the reservation, the staff was very helpful, calling me back twice to make sure they understood my preferences well.
Arrival was perfect, valet parking was very comfortable and immediately someone came to help with the luggage.
We arrived at noon and could check in immediatly, so we did not have to wait at all (checking normally at 3pm). Of course this was because I was lucky the room was ready.
We stayed in a prestige room. It was very spacious, good beds, nice shower. Indeed (as in some other reviews) the television is a bit small.
After a whole day of shopping we decided to take room service. Caesar’s salad was just ok, but dessert was HEAVINLY!
Also breakfast was more than decent with a wide choice of bread, cheese, fruit, … No need to have lunch after such a breakfast!
Check in and check out went very smoothly, staff is very professional and friendly.
Some (minor) con’s:
We wanted some thinner/flatter pillows and this was not possible, which resulted in a stiff neck the next day. For a hotel of such a standing I would expect that they would be prepared for this.
Our room was on the ground floor and we did have some noise from the corridor and the street. But well, it would be a shame to put carpet in the corridor, the tiles are so nice.
Room was very nice, but since the walls are painted in white, it does give a bit of a cold and sterile feeling.

Next time we visit Maastricht, we would certainly stay there again, but ask for a room not on the ground floor and take our own pillows.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor. Don't miss breakfast

Dear Keppebolletje,

First of all I would like to thank you for the review. The compliments about our staff and rooms are very friendly.
We have received more comments about our pillows, therefore we are currently developing a pillow menu which offers a choice off pillows.
So if you check-in in the future I hope our staff can offer you a choice from our pillow menu.

Kind regards,
Berry Gerretsen

I cannot express how satisfied we were with our stay at the Kruisherenhotel. The blend of old and new in this hotel was remarkable. Picture mid century modern meets centuries old monistary. We have traveled all over the world and I can honestly say this was one of the most memorable hotels we have ever experienced.

The staff was effecient, the rooms were spotless and comfortable, and the courtyard in the center of the church is mesmorizing after dark with a facinating moving water sculpture....truely magical.

This property is a work of art, and I would be proud to recommend it to anyone. The Kruisherenhotel has exceeded our expectations in every possible way, remarkable. I would have paid admission just to walk through this incredible hotel. A truely 5-star experience. Please stay at this property, it is that good.
