“Fascinating caves”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

The caves in Maastricht are truly fascinating. Pieter, our tour guide, was an excellent storyteller.

Some of the people in our group had baby carriages, so accessibility isn't really an issue. Pieter took them along a route without stairs.

The cons are that the group size felt much too large and the length felt far too short. I could have spent much longer exploring and will hopefully be back to do so on a private tour one day.

“Caves - well worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

Well worth a visit if you have the time. We had a good guide (Joop) who took us for an hour long walk in the caves and pointed out some interesting points about the caves - these are man made, not naturally created caves, and also some art in the caves. Bring your own torch so you can see more, and also where you are heading - the lighting provided can be quite dim. The cafe above the hill has some great local food - try the local mushrooms grown in the caves! We booked our English speaking tour via the tourist information centre in Maastricht. The caves are a bit out of town - so it's about a 30m walk from town, or you can bike or drive there - the tourist office advised us that it was best to walk there - and it was a good walk from town, as we also threw in a walk around the town's fortifications along the way.

“History, darkness and more”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

First of all, be aware that the caves are cold. Reaching 30m below the ground surface and with a very high humidity, going around down there can cause you a cold if you do not were warm enough clothing. There are English guided tours and Dutch ones: I recommend choosing a tour where you understand the language because the guide, beyond giving interesting insights on the how and why the caves and what is inside them were built, is fun to listen (they are humorous). The caves are obviously dark and the group (made of some 15ppl) will have to stay close together, in order to avoid to get someone lost in the caves, which, apparently, are made of thousands of tunnels. The group goes around with some torches given from the guide to two people from the group.

Those caves were build by people and are not the type which is naturally created by underground rivers, for example.

The price is some 5,6€ per person and the tour lasts approximately 1h (if "we do not get lost", the guide underlines).

You reach the caves with bus 4 from the central railway station, then when you get off the bus, you must climb a hill and.. there your are!

We had our baby with us who cried for a little in the caves before falling asleep: note that you cannot take a stroller inside the caves. We were allowed to park our stroller in the ticket-office premises.

“Great English tour of the caves.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

Even though I have been from this region, I never visited these caves under the St. Pieters mountain. Having friends over from Norway, I decided to go to these caves and booked the English tour in advance. It was sunny and therefore quite crowded, but the English group was conveniently sized.

It was an overall interesting tour of an hour and the humor of the tour guide made it really fun.
