“Great art museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

Visited a special exhibition of Russian art before the revolution. The exhibition was very interesting and was educational. The Dutch ensured there was space and captions to properly enjoy the exhibits. The art gallery has a nice cafe, many other exhibits and is beside the river with a short walk to the town. Worth visiting if one is in the area or forty minutes ride from Aachen on the 50 bus.

“worth a visit, but with some reservations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

First of all, this museum - near the town centre and on the banks of the Maas - enjoys a superb location. It isn't difficult for English speakers to find their way round and there's a café on the ground floor (which we didn't visit). the bad news is that the car park is not so easy to find and is very expensive; 2.30 Euros an hour. The exhibitions are well set out, but on the whole the content of the museum doesn't quite live up to the architecture. And you can tell it was designed by a man - we were there on a Saturday and the ladies' loo was woefully inadequate for the number of visitors. Give yourself time to queue if you are female.
Delighted to find there was free Wi-fi and the exhibition we saw was even set up with QR codes on some pictures. On the whole an enjoyable afternoon.

“There's more to this museum than you might think!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Bonnefanten has at the moment the finest selection of Russian paintings from the start the 20th century called "The big change", showing Russian symbolism, kubism, primitivism, structuralism, etc. Icons from the Moscou and St. Petersburgmuseums are all in Maastricht.

And in case you think that's all, ask the staff to direct you to the permanent exhibitions...to see the highest quality medieval wood sculptures and paintings (e.g Breughel or Breughel studio) after lunch.
Reserve a good part of a day for this visit. Enjoy the riverside view in between exhibitions and have a bite in the Ipanema bar/restaurant to recharge for the next round.

“Put this on your tick list”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

This modern art gallery/ museum is worth the short walk from the city centre. We visited the Russian art exhibition which was fascinating. Don't miss the silent movies -they are brilliant! The audio guide is very useful in explaining the paintings. We spent 31/2 hours there and could have stayed longer, so allow plenty of time if you want to see this exhibition. The cafe is bright and cheerful with helpful staff to translate the blackboard menu. Looking forward to my next trip here.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

Some interesting exhibitions here in an modern and well organsied buidling complex. Because the building is so large, the visitors are well distributed so that it doesnt feel full or crowded. Nice walk from the city centre, along the riverside.
