“Definitely acceptable - but not a true "Grand hotel"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

The name “Grand hotel de l’Empereur” suggests a bit more than it actually is: not a true Grand Hotel, but definitely acceptable. It is situated directly across from the central railway station in Maastricht. Check-in was efficient and quick. My room was on the 2nd floor. A decent size room with a full bath in the bathroom and a secluded terrace (although there were no chairs outside). Free internet and (instant) coffee making facility were available. Breakfast was OK, but not great: with “tap-your-own” coffee and juice from machines and not a very large selection of breakfast items the overall appearance resembled a cheaper hotel.
The bar was inviting, with dark wood paneling and a relaxing atmosphere. Too bad the variety of specialty beers was not that large: being situated so close to the Belgian border one would expect quite an assortment of Belgian beers. I paid just under € 200 which I think was a bit too pricey for the quality – but that may well have been because of some event going on in town: my favorite hotel and my second choice were both fully booked.

Shabby hotel. Tired decor, cleaning left something to be desired. Breakfast adequate but nothing special. Unfortunutely the night we stayed there was a wedding in the function room which played loud music into the early hours impair our sleep. The staff were unconcerend when we raised this issue. Location good for train station and town.

This grand old hotel build in 1902 is located opposite the railway station .Our three night stay was comfortable and quiet. When we arrived, our room was not ready to be occupied... however- we were offered a larger "deluxe room." at an additional cost which we agreed to due our tiredness from travelling. Unfortunately this 'non-smoking' room- in a non-smoking hotel reeked of cigar smoke and therefore we finally changed to deluxe room #146 at the end of a long corridor at the back of the hotel. This was a large room with a king size bed. there was tea/coffee facilities, bathrobes, free wifi and aircon. The ensuite included a bath and was spotless. We did notice lot of late-night door-banging but we did sleep very well. The room attendants were friendly and we did enjoy our expensive stay. Room Tip: We found this hotel quiet; to our satisfaction, but noted the loud banging of doors..

The location of this hotel is perfect, just across the street from the train station. The outside of the hotel is very beautiful but the inside is a bit 70's. I can't vouch for the other rooms but mine had a view of other rooms (and little else) and a rather stifling feel. The pool was good if you are 5 and want to play marco polo and the 10 euro sauna (infra red light) was like being locked in a closet sized microwave. All this would have been fine had the front desk been a little more helpful. They were mostly very young and some were very snotty. At one point the wifi went out completely (because it was already partially out in the room) and when I asked about it the girl at the desk said well I can't do anything about it and proceeded to ignore my other questions. Granted they offered to upgrade me after I packed everything up and left but really at that point it was too late. Maastricht has some great hotels very near the station...go with something else.

Room Tip: Don't take 116

If you are travelling around europe by train this hotel certainly will be a good pick. Very close to central station, european standard, traditional and near city center.
The hotel has 2 kind of rooms the new design furnished and the old one style. We stayed at the old one and we felt confortable, the room are european standard, not very big. I didn't like the mattress because it was to soft, I prefer hard one. But this is very personal taste, so everything was fine. I suggest this hotel.

This is an excellent hotel in the heart of Maastricht. It is very near the city center as well as the train station. Yes, the rooms are a bit musty but it is an old hotel and by European standards, it is quite nice. The staff is very helpful and the breakfast is good. The bar is nice to grab a drink before bed and the restaurant serves decent fare. The building has character and the location can't be beat!

This is one of the dirtiest rooms I have ever stayed in, piles of dust in table tops in the room, bathroom needs a thorough cleaning, especially the closet, faucets need to be cleaned with anti oxide cleanser and the carpets need a change . The rooms need a total renovation but it were clean it would not be too much of a problem. This is not a four star hotel , it is large, breakfast area huge like a canteen. People at the reception were polite and friendly though. Breakfast was ok, bad coffee, ok for one night as it is in a good location. İ was told Napeleon Bonaparte stayed here so it probably has not been cleaned since then.
