“Perfect for train travellers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

The comfort of wheeling your luggage right into the lobby outweighs the fact that it is ready for some refreshing renovation. Perfect location at the head of the once and again prestigious Stationstraat in trendy Wyck . On the first floor with three windows viewing the station you hardly hear a sound. The room I am speaking of, 103, is big and has all the nessesary furniture to do you writing or have tea for two. A water boiler and all the amenities to brew your own cup. Given the size of the room, the little old TV set is ridiculous. And bathrooms redone in the seventies look hideous now and don't age well at all. But we slept like babies on cozy matrasses and enjoyed the freshness of breakfast in the mornings and the ambiance of the great hotelbar at night.

Room Tip: we liked room 103, facing the entrance of Maastricht main station

Looking for a good hotel in a supremely practical location in Maastricht? Look no further. L'Empereur is located immediately across from Maastricht train station, and close enough to the A2 motorway to be as easily reachable as possible, with a large car park under the new wing. It's a solid, stately **** hotel too, with comfortable, well-furnished rooms. Nothing fancy, but nothing missing either. I was pleased to see that climate control was available, but that windows could also be opened.

On arrival it turned out that our corporate booking system had messed up and no rooms were actually reserved for us. Desk staff sorted this out with a smile and a free bump up one class of room by way of apology for the inconvenience. Good service!

I wasn't able to try all the hotel amenities (such as an indoor swimming pool) during my short stay, but did have the opportunity to try the restaurant. This is possibly the best part of the hotel, so good that I would consider eating here even if sleeping elsewhere. The cuisine and ambience is truly Burgundian, with on the one hand immaculate formality and on the other friendly, good-humoured service. And excellent food, with wines to match. I was fortunate enough not to have to pay for my meal myself, but prices were reasonable. The house wines were very good too.

Room Tip: The station is on the east (front) side of the hotel. If you're concerned about train noise, a r...

This is the worse hotel I have ever been to. It is meant to be a a four star hotel, I was expecting a nice place. What a disappointment! I simply do not understand how people who rated that hotel on the website could have left a positive review. I have been in many hotels, and I really am not of a fussy type.

They advertise the hotel showing a lovely period stone facade, but actually the hotel is in a huge big 1970's block adjacent to the nice looking part. The lobby, corridors, the lift, the pool, and of course the room: It all looks like an airport 2 stars hotel which has never been decorated since 1970s. The decoration is ghastly, the furniture is outrageous: bedside tables from the 70's are discoloured and have a built in safe (not working of course) and radio. The TV is resting on a plastic top table from the restaurant of the hotel downstairs.

We woke up on the Sunday morning to find there was not hot water!! It obviously wasn't the first time as the receptionist didn't seem too worried or embarrassed about it. He was most unhelpful, not even polite, which as quite shocking, as everybody is so nice in the Netherlands. he came up to the room, not to repair, but just to make sure we were saying the truth, as if we didn't know how to use a tap! We were then proposed to go the the floor below to take a shower in a room on a different floor! We then got a call letting us know that the boiler was being reset, and hot water should be back in 5 minutes. By then, we had lost 30 minutes already and were already late to go to our meeting, so we had to leave the hotel without taking a shower.

The "swimming pool" is basically an underground parking, made of painted building blocks, with two plastic fake plants, flanking a cold water basin.

Poor service, no apologies, long queues to check in, long queue to check out...

Location is fine if you are here for business as it is close to the business centre, and right across the train station. bad location for tourism, as it is on the other side of the river, far away from the nice old part of the town.

The whole experience was a total disaster. And again, I am not fussy.

First of all forget the Jugenstil ambiance, The hotel is an incoherent mixture of all
kinds of furtinure and styles. While the dining room is arguably nice, the lobby and the breakfast hall makes you feel that you are sitting in a hospital cantine. If you think this is faded glory in a nice way, it isn't it. But that is all okay, for 125 euro a night you can't expect that much. The main thing what bugged us (two couples) was that the rooms where terribly hot, the AC blew hot air or nothing. Further more if you open a window, there is an awful lot of streetnoise from the buses that stop in front of the door. So we got little sleep. I am sure there must be better option, in the same price range. The four star really does not define anything.

I stayed here for 10 days in January, it was fine. The staff was very nice (they even got my jeans washed in about 2 hours one night when I forgot to leave laundry) and the room was perfectly acceptable. The restaurant is lacking in variety - I don't eat much meat and had a hard time finding anything good - although the lattes were great! The location is easy - right across from the train station and on a good shopping street. It's about a 10 min walk to the city center. Don't go here looking for glamour, but if you want convenience, it's fine.

being across from the central train station is so key...only real problems: the wifi connection sucks. but, the breakfast is really nice, great way to start the day of lots of walking/exploring around the town. the beds are kinda hard (compared to the amrath in amsterdam), but we had no real complaints about the place. good place to headquarter and lovely to be able to get off the train and wheel your luggage just a tiny distance to the front door.

We had a quiet (despite being close to the station) and sufficiently spacy room with a proper bathroom, yet the room and the linen lacked cleanlyness. The breakfast was good, but pretty expensive, so was the hotel's garage.
