Even though it was difficult to find, it was absolutely worth the walk to see these old town walls and especially the Helpoort. the Photographic potential is endless and it brings the history of Maastricht to life.

“Great medieval experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

We started our historical tour in Maastricht at the Helpoort, for me a great mediëval experience! From all sides you can imagine how it was to live in mediëval Maastricht. After walking around the Helpoort, we went inside (free entrance) and walked on a steeple staircase to several levels: a small but interesting museum (a very friendly guide tells you all about the history of Maastricht), bathrooms and small views on the town. The Helpoort is a perfect starting point for strolling on the old town walls, then you can go to the St. Pieterberg or to the Vrijthof square.

“One slice of the history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

For such a small city, Maastricht has some great historical sights. Definitely venture to the Helpoort - you can see the old fortifications and many other lovely things - there is a large green space, crooked old homes and cobbled streets. A great photo opp.

“Historically significant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

This is supposed to be one of the oldest European town gates. Maastricht has a few of these. Helpoort is one of the most well maintained of them. Should be visited.

“Do this as part of a town trail from the tourist office!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

If like me you like to see as much as possible in a destination, I would suggest going to the Tourist Office on arrival. There you can purchase a couple of town trails for about 2 Euros apiece - the Old Town Trail and the Fortifications Trail, both available in English, cover the Helpoort and take about an hour and a half each. They are a pleasant way to see a sight such as this, which is just an old monument otherwise! The Helpoort was actually one of the town gates to Maastricht, and the only one which survives. YOu can still see the grooves down which the gate came when the city needed to be locked each night. There is also an interesting structure on the fron of the gate, from where oil etc could be poured on the enemy. To the side of the gate, there is a small museum giving you more info, but like many museums, it was shut on a Monday which was the day we did the trail. There are other bits of wall nearby which the trail leaflet said were extremely pretty in the spring when bulbs come up through the remnants. If possible visit the Helpoort and then combine with a beer or a meal in the atmospheric Restaurant Sjiek, St Piterstraat 13, which is also deservedly highly recommended on Tripadvisor (reasonably priced too!)
