“At best an average hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

We just stayed here -- spending one night on a "special price" invitation. Consequently, we were not expecting to get the best room in the hotel but we did find it curious that we had to walk through the hotel-owned candy store to reach the steep stairs to climb to our room. The room was average and the bed was good but we were awakened at least four or five times -- starting at midnight and ending at about 5 a.m., by drunks coming out of a bar located across the street from our room. So if you want to stay here, be sure to ask for a room that is not above the candy store so that you will not be facing the bar and the drunks. The breakfast is expensive and not worth the price. The bread is made in the hotel-owned bakery, but we had the distinct impression that the breakfast patrons were treated to yesterday's bread and pastries. When we sat down, we helped ourselves to brewed coffee. This was good but then when another guest ordered a cappuchino, we decided to do the same---only to be given a nasty look by the server that indicated she was greatly put out by the request (we got the cappuchinos and they were worth the look). The service was certainly average at best. This hotel is the classic case of "resting on one's laurels"---it must have been great at one time but this era has long since passed. Too bad.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms above the hotel-owned candyshop as they face a street populated by drunks who will k...

I stayed this week in Schimmelpenninck Huys Hotel and it didn't live up to expectations. The room was small, but I knew that upfront and that was ok. What wasn't ok was: 1) the mattras had seen better days, it was soft and sloping and very uncomfortable, 2) the bathroom/toilet has no door and 3) the hotel needs a sprucing up - it is a little tired at the edges. The noisy party across the road didn't help, but then you can't really blame the hotel for that. Breakfast was good and the staff friendly.

This is just a nice hotel in the middle of everything. I don't have much to add on previous comments. Did not try the restaurant, so can't comment on that. We had a room on the third floor, which was nice enough, but there is no elevator and the stairs are pretty steep. No problem for us, but for elderly people this might be something to consider. Staff is very friendly. Breakfast is over-average, however not over the top. On sundaymorning breakfast was a bit messy, with just not enough staff to replace coffee cups, bowls and dishes.

We stayed here for the weekend for the Assen TT race. The circuit is 20 minutes away. Hotel is right in the centre of Groningen which is a student town so plenty of bars, restaurants etc within walking distance. Room was very large with a big bathroom, clean and tidy. Very nice. Staff were very good too.
The only downside was leaving the windows open at night meant the noise from delivery trucks and late night bars was evident. Note to self: have another beer next time !

We stayed here on a Saturday night in early September. It's an older hotel located smack dab in the centre of Groningen, no more than a few hundreds metres away from the train station, the central square and everything else you would want to see in this charming town.

It's more than a hotel really. It's a complex, or a compound, consisting of two large residential buildings, a spacious and pleasant courtyard, a large indoor/outdoor breakfast area, three restaurants, a bakery and a chocolate atelier. The place oozes character (of the good kind). This is definitely not a chain hotel. It's hard to describe the character, but let's try this: eclectic, comfortable, historical, lived-in, grand and classy, some kitsch. The annex (wood, with balconies) reminded us of a Key West hotel, but I think Mediterranean is the look they were going for. There are some decor elements from the 18th and 19th centuries.

We had a large 4th (and top) floor attic room. It was spacious (bigger than other rooms on the lower floors), comfortable, grand in some aspects, cheap in others. Big bathroom. Older TV had about 5 English stations. Downsides: the wifi signal did not reach the room (only the balcony); there is a set of narrow Dutch-style stairs for the final flight.

The breakfast was great (but not in the extreme luxury range). Huge selection of quality breads and other baked goodies, egg station, boiled eggs, delicious coffee, properly cooked bacon (unusual in Holland); delicious sausages, selection of fresh fruit, cold cuts, quality cheese, etc. The buffet is set up in the back of a bakery, which is very cool.

One downside: noise. From our room we could here carrousing and loud music (which for some reason was cranked occasionally to high voluem). This went on until the wee hours. We think there is a student residence behind the hotel and we were there during orientation week. One of us slept without any problem; one of us did not, despite the free earplugs conveniently provided to guests.

The service here was great. Our various requests (top floor room, extra pillows, and ice) were all granted by the reception without incident or comment.

When we were here they were hosting a wedding party and it all seemed to be going really well.

Recommended.

Well the hotel looked very nicely done up inside the lobby and courtyard and restaurant areas. The rooms were a disappointment. Ours was very small overlooking the courtyard restaurant. Not so great as you can hear the diners late into the evening. They provide earplugs so they know this is a problem. The main problem was the bed. Very uncomfortable. Worst bed in 6 weeks of travel in Europe. The bathroom was fine. Nice bathtub. Gold fixtures might be a bit over the top.

Very close to station and high street. I stayed in a room which was slightly detached from the main building and accessed through a courtyard and up some steep steps. Room had a nice balcony area and was pleasantly bright and airy. The bathroom was spacious and modern but the bedroom in comparison was a little dated and cramped. The bedside table was hanging off the wall - a fact I discovered when I put a book on it and it gave way. However, bar area was cosy and staff were very friendly so overall a good stay for the price.
