“A mustsee for people interrested in technique and history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

This pumpingstation helped keep the netherlands dry. It ran on coal, now replaced by oil-burners. But from the burners onward, it is all steam, giant pistons, wheel-pumps and pipes, pipes and more pipes. In 2011 a modern info-centre was added giving info on the polders and water management and the machines, both in Dutch and English. The museum is run by volunteers and their passion is visible. The machines only run a couple of days a year, then it is ridiculously busy. But on other days, it is also good to see.
We had a very nice afternoon here. Absolutely worth visiting.

“Prachtich”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012 via mobile

Run by professionals and enthusiastic volunteers. Beautiful building with a original steam engines in perfect working conditions. We had the good fortune that the pumping station was running when we visited, so everything was turning and thumping and hissing. Beautiful!

“Amazing piece of technology”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

This was a very interesting and rewarding visit. We enjoyed every minute of it. The newly opened visitors centre is superb and very entertaining. They firstly introduce the Pumping station through a short 3D film and then you can walk around the centre, learning more about the water management in the Netherlands. Even though most inscriptions are in Dutch, you receive a leaflet with their translation to English.

The visit itself was even more interesting. The two of us had our own tour guide, a very nice gentleman who knew everything about the mechanics and working of the pumping station. Sadly, neither of us were from a technical background so we could not indulge him with further questions of technical nature. However we received all information we could and it was very informative. There was another group of two having a tour in Dutch. Even though our tour guide apologized for his English, it was actually very good and we had no problems understanding him at all. We were glad to come on such a gloomy and rainy day as we had the pumping station all to ourselves.

“Got there but wasn't allowed in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2011

I really wanted to give 5 stars to this review as I am sure the site is superb.
My rating is based our experience of (not) accessing the museum.
We drove up from Eindhoven with friends from the UK and took the opportunity to locate the site, particularly as it was within a short drive from our hotel in Bolsward. Being a Eunesco heritate site, this was definitely worth a visit.
The building is grand, well renovated with a modern visitor access building.
Despite being two mature 40-somethings, we were refused entry as this is possible only as part of a guided tour, being told that :
a) we would have to wait until enough people arrived . . .since it was a dark rainy day, few visitors about, this could take a while ! . .
b) most likely this could not be in English based on numbers, so our chances were slim.
I asked why this was, the pumping station was not in use at that time, surely not such a dangerous place ? Answer = those are the rules . . .
We returned to the car and watched a family of 4 behind us do the same, I presume they gave up also.
