We came upon this small museum by chance, on the way to Makkum. It portrays rural life in Friesland, during past times. There is a church ( usually with an art exhibition), a bakery, a blacksmith, a musuem farmhouse etc. We thoroughly enjoyed the farmhouse, with the beautiful tiled fireplace, the bed in the cupboard in the wall, and the barn all under one roof. There are many farmhouses in this area today which still have the house and the barn under the same roof. They are called Stolp. Of particular interest, was the exhibition in the cafe, of 6 different green and white wood gables.Apparently different symbols on the gables mean different things, and the waitress in the cafe was able to tell us what some of it meant. We then notcied as we continued our journey that many of the farmhouses in FRiesland have these gables, and were able to interpret what some of them meant. This is an hour or two well spent in order to better understand the area.
