“Great staff, bad breakfast, no internet”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

Rooms and facilities are clean and well maintained. Bathroom smelled like a hospital bathroom when I first arrived but not so bad on subsequent days. Beds were comfortable. The highlight of the place are the staff who are wonderful.

Any breakfast item that was cooked was quite awful, eggs in particular. Continental (cheese, meats, yogurt) was good though. Cappuccino machine was fair to poor.

Internet in my room only worked occasionally and then it was slow. Others in block 2 had similar issues while those in 3 and 4 did not. It was clearly a problem with some of the wi-fi routers in block 2. We complained each morning and nothing was ever fixed. Having to trek down to the lobby at 2am to get internet was a pain.

Extended family February weekend break with everyone enjoying it. Rooms were modern, spacious. Beds were very comfortable and sleep quality was excellent. We all found the buffet restaurant food of a very good quality and plenty of choice. There was plenty for us to do within the hotel and in Assen itself. Recommended for a weekend break.

Room Tip: Pillows may be a bit on the hard and small size for some people

The hotel serves its purpose and has a lot of amenities including a gym, swimming pool a theatre and an ice rink (only in the winter). It has several restaurants and bars and the food is fine but most meals are buffet style. It is not somewhere I would stay for a holiday but for long business stays it is fine.

Room Tip: Try not to choose rooms at the back of the hotel as your view will be the back of the ice rink and t...

Where to be begin ??

Room

The room was small and cozy but certainly nothing special, all in all good enough to sleep in and just about what I would expect for the price

Food

Horrific ! This was without aa shadow of a doubt the worst buffet I have ever experienced, minimal choice for a main course, not a steak in sight and the Schnitzel was hard and plastic like, the onion rings were cooked to death to the point it was like chewing a twig from a tree and the mashed potato was more like soup, for breakfast again the bacon was unchewable and I was afraid that if I had dropped my egg it would have bounces back up and broken the lampshades.

House drinks

On the website it clearly states under house drinks, a number of premium spirits and liquers, i.e Baileys and Tia Maria, if you like Baileys don't get excited here, you will more than likely experience a very cheap and nasty alternative called 'Millwoods'. I happened to notice more and more cheap alternatives to 'real' drinks aswell, the vodkas and whiskeys also looked like they came from a budget shop, not the behaviour I expect from a hotel that boasts of premium drinks on their site.

Entertainment

Usual stuff, bowling, pool tables, swimming pool and not much else really.

Overall experience

The feeling was more that of an 'old folks home' after walking around for 20 minutes or so, I felt i'd done all there was to be done, I would not recommend this hotel or it's experience to anybody and struggle to understand why anybody would stay here instead of Preston Palace.

This hotel is decent looking, with a pretty clean room, its quite cosy in the room. The waitresses at the all-in restaurants are friendly. However, the food at the all-in, are quite less variety and oily for the vegetarians. My dutch boyfriend do not take oily food well, due to sensitive gastric and is allergic to seafood. He did not like this hotel at all. Its filled with people and seriously overcrowding. There are so many people at the hall and simply no chance to use the facilities at all due to long queues (especially when they only have limited tables for playing pool. For me, the restaurant is a high class snack bar with a variety of salmon salad...

Worse thing is, my boyfriend started throwing up and having diahorrea after eating their food. He was already not feeling so well, so we requested to refund the fee we paid for the remaining days. (We booked for 5 days, stayed for 1 night only and requested for just 2 nights refund). The counter refused to provide the refund as the hotel was booked through a website, so my advice is not to pay first and just experience the hotel first. Eat their food, and if u like it, then book for it. In the end, even with emails sending to and fro, i was not able to get the refund which was totally disappointing.

Room Tip: Try the hotel first. or book without all-in. its still quite reasonable. DO not pick rooms too near...

The hotel is well placed for the Assen race circuit and the city centre.
Very friendly staff and just a great atmosphere during the event.
We are and drank here. No complaints.
I will be returning next year.

Stayed here while my partner went to the TT superbike circuit on a B&B basis On our first night we had the family room which is huge. The following three nights were spent in a twin room. We did book a double but I think that requirement may have been lost in translation. They failed to link my two bookings (one through a sport travel company and one extra night booked separately) even though I'd written to them so if you have specific requirements don't expect them to be picked up from an email. The rooms are very clean and relatively modern. The bathrooms have spacious walk in showers but no baths. Hotels in Holland don't seem to have tea/coffee making facilities and the same applied here. The breakfast is buffet style and there is a good choice of cooked, continental and fruit. The cups for tea and coffee are quite small so you have to make a few trips to the machine to get a couple of mugs worth of tea and there is always a queue. Evening meal can also be taken in a help yourself buffet style in the same room. It's €15 per head and there is a wide choice of fish, meats, veg, salad & dessert. There is also a pub you can eat at within the hotel grounds. My only disappointment was the pool & spa. I wanted to spend time having treatments while he was at the race circuit but its not that kind of spa. There were no beauty treatments and the indoor pool is just for children. If you're walking to the race circuit get the directions before you leave home as the directions from reception are hopeless and it's easy to get lost in the forest surrounding the circuit! I recommend a taxi for your first trip out there if you're on foot. It's close to the hotel but not well signposted.
