“Perfect place to visit Castles and Trains”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

We picked this pub/B&B for its location and because of good food reviews. We were not disappointed. Our friend joined us for the evening and the food lived up to the reviews. The rooms were large and very comfortable with all the amenities. Ample parking in the rear was a bonus. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast before visiting Lewes Castle and the Bluebell Steam Railway.

Four of us stayed for two nights on a last of the summer wine trip for southerners. Good wine ! Gorgeous trips out , Lewes ,Brighton and the Downs, with a reliably lovely supper to come back to.
The steak is good, but the fish and seafood is the star!
Breakfast is lavish, but baked beans should be added as a matter of course.
To add a spice of danger for us oldies, the turn out of the car park is left only, and be jolly quick about it.

Room Tip: Front rooms are on a fairly busy road.

Fantastic menu focused on fresh fish and seafood but with some very good meat as well. Best to order the lobster thermidor in advance so you won't be disappointed. Good friendly service - well thought out and balanced menu - didn't have room for pudding so will have to go back!!

Room Tip: Not applicable.

We stayed for two nights midweek and ate in the restaurant on both evenings. This is not about the accommodation which was by the way absolutely fine. Bernard and Sylvia are assisted by Lynne & make you very welcome in this pub restaurant. Bernard is the chef and specialises in a wide range of fish dishes and much of the raw material is sourced from Newhaven.

Sole, bream, scaliops, prawns, crab and lobster-they are all prepared and cooked to perfection. A starter of flaked smoked haddock with peas, prawns, creamy mash and cheese sauce is to die for. There are of course meat and vegetarian dishes but we didn't wander far enough to try any of those. Sensibly priced, attentively served and eagerly consumed. What more can you say? I've read the other reviews which are a mixture of comments between staying here and having a meal in the restaurant. I'm reviewing the accommodation.
I arrived late (just after 10pm) and was received by a friendly lady who explained politely hat breakfast wouldn't be till 8.30 ish. Not sure if that's the norm or because the owners had just returned from a long trip. She did however, offer to do a breakfast tray there and then or reduce the bill.

Room looked nice enough -.four-poster and the accoutrements mentioned by other reviewers - Murray Mints and fruit. The bathroom, on initial inspection looked fine. But when I came to use it, there was hair (not mine) in the sink and bath. There were also cobwebs and a strange looking spider on the ceiling just above the shower head. Evidence, I fear, of poor housekeeping and of course, so avoidable.

It's a shame because the people seem nice. Perhaps I arrived on an off-night......

Room Tip: Be careful to check on breakfast times in case you're looking for an early getaway.

Working locally, but living 2 hours away, I decided to book into a hotel for the night in Lewes. I looked on several websites and for some reason all the hotels were full. So I looked on Tripadvisor for something different. I saw some good reviews re the Blacksmiths Arms in Offham just outside of Lewes.
From the outset the owners and staff make you feel more like family. I was shown to my room (one of four), and upon my return to the bar about 30 mins later, I was poured a very clean and tidy pint of the local Lewes ale "Harveys".
Admittedly, the bar is set out more for restaurant configuration than a drinkers pub, and the choice of beer is Harvey's or a Lager. However the beer has been looked after well and the choice of food is excellent. I went for the local caught sea bass with crab and lobster rice. The fish was so tender and the sauce, very flavoursome.
I finished my meal with the cheese board, which had a selection of 4 cheeses, accompanied by a salad and grape dressing.
As for the room.
The bed was a King size bed and very comfortable. The ensuite was bright clean and tidy.
If I need to stop over for work in the future, I will definitely choose this establishment again.

Having eaten here many times when we lived in England it was a pleasure to return and not only eat here but stay in this cosy old pub as well. The rooms are lovely, hosts Sylvia and Bernard, very welcoming. I also had my first Harvey's Best Bitter for 4 years and that went down well too! Some friends from Brighton joined us for dinner one evening and they too enjoyed their meals and will definitely be returning (the Duck with Orange Sauce and the home-made Steak & Kidney Pie were certainly eagerly consumed). Lots of nice seafood dishes on the menu as well inc chowder and crab.

If you are B&B'ing the breakfasts are also excellent. Although the pub is on a main(ish) road the rooms are quiet and there is lovely countryside around you. Lewes is only 15 mins away (the Pailin Thai restaurant nr the railway station is worth trying), and although you can easily and quickly drive on to Brighton from there, there is also a more picturesque route to Brighton if you turn left out of the pub car park, then left @ the next intersection and follow the road to Ditchling Village. Turn left @ the x-roads and follow the road up to Ditchling Beacon for great views (English weather permitting!) and continue on to Brighton.

We look forward to returning to The Blacksmiths Arms when we are again in Sussex.
