I have previously given a raving review of Kronenhalle and thus I invited my wife for Sunday dinner in July. Initially we were very well served and the food was a delight. Before the encore of the main curse however, we were basically cut out of the service as Mr. Mueller, apparently a regular guest, got his table next to us. The waitress, which until minutes ago served us well was now exclusively assigned to the other table. That meant other waiters on a sporadic base had a look after us. This allowed us to order the desert. My wife had a wonderful daily special desert. I had asked the waiter what he would recommend the 'Torta gelato tiramisu' or the panna cotta. I did not really get an answer that was meaningful and therefore choose the torta gelato. What a disappointment... It was a piece of ice cream that they had prefabricated a long time ago and presumably forgotten at the back of some freezer. No restaurant of any kind should serve anything like it... Much less a classy place like the Kronenhalle. The kitchen was obviously careless in managing their stock, the chef who prepared the fresh trimmings on the plate must have been grossly negligent as one could see that the torta gelato was old and way too solidly frozen. And the waiter who served us obviously had no time to look at the plate when he was serving it. When I realized, the server had long gone. I tried the desert and it had a strange taste - like ice cream would get if left in the freezer for a very long time. So I stopped eating immediately and took time to test the service, whilst my wife finished her desert. 25 minutes later the waitress approached us again. Asking me if I did not like the desert. I shared my concerns with her, which resulted in her being a bit annoyed. Taking the plate reluctantly back to the kitchen. A few minutes later she came back and confirmed that the desert was not up to standard and that they would remove it from the bill. I did not get a proper apology...
See, Kronenhalle is a wonderful place. The service that evening was not badly organized but outright unprofessional. When you have the maitre 'd, and so many waiting staffs constantly swirling around your table, without serving you, something is really wrong.
The desert is not a disappointment it was a health hazard and it's unforgivable. In particular in combination with the snoddy reaction by the personnel after my complaint. A house with such an awesome history and tradition should serve all guests in a perfect way - which does not rule out to give special attention to some of your most important guests.
