“Great base, good value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

I use this hotel when I'm in Zurich for business but this time we stayed here while visiting for Ironman; it's a great base and while you can walk to the centre it's right on a tram line and we used that as our main means of transport.

We really liked having our breakfast delivered to the room (there's no restaurant) but If you are staying for more than a few days you might want to vary your order.

The staff were all friendly, although Roman deserves a special mention for being particularly helpful!

Having worked in Zurich many times, I have stayed in several hotels. EMA House is a great choice for small families or a longer stay for a couple who need the room to move around during the "early morning hours" as you adjust to the time difference without disturbing the other person. I have jet lag, but my wife can seemingly adjust immediately (i'm envious).

We stayed at EMA House for 12 nights over the end of June and beginning of July. We had what I think is called an Executive Residential Suite. The "apartment" had a separate bedroom and 1 and a half bathrooms plus a living (sitting) room, dining room and galley kitchen. It was very spacious by anyone's standards; the ensuite bathroom even had a shower and a bathtub with shower.

You are an easy 5 minute downhill walk to Hauptbanhof or central train station (crossing the Limmat river) or 2 stops from the station on the #11 tram (towards Auzelg when leaving the station or towards Rehalp when going to the station). The tram is very convenient as it stops adjacent to the hotel.

We bought food at the COOP store across from the central train station where prices were not that different from home. It is so nice to wake up and make your own breakfast without having to get dressed and go downstairs to a breakfast room, but I understand that for shorter stays the hotel will deliver breakfast every morning.

Although we went out for most dinners we still had a few in our suite. We also had no problem inviting friends over for a drink. The internet is cheap and stable although you do have to sign on every day with the provided passcode. The smart TV had a dozen English channels from a selection of over 200 channels spanning most major languages as well as internet access.

In brief, the rates are very reasonable for all that you receive and basically on par with what you would often pay for a single hotel room in Zurich. It is a godsend for a couple when one of you has insomnia and doesn't want to destroy your relationship by waking the other person!

Our family (2 adults, 2 children 8 and 16 years old) stayed here 3 nights in June, 2013. We had a junior suite, which was plenty of room (two twin beds placed in living room area prior to our arrival, separate bedroom for parents). There is also a kitchen table, where your included breakfast is brought to your room each morning at your specified time (arranged at check-in); coffee/tea, orange juice, croissants/breads w/ jams/jellies, fresh fruit bowls, cheese and meat tray (and for an extra charge, you can get hard boiled eggs). There's a refrigerator w/ freezer, kitchen sink, microwave (but utensils/plates locked up unless you've paid for an upgrade). The room was very quiet and there is excellent security (key required in elevator to select your floor), although the neighborhood is so nice that I'm not sure the security is needed. Very large bathroom with a strong shower and separate tub, nice amenities (and EMA will provide comb, toothbrush, etc., if you've forgotten yours). EMA is only about 2-3 stops from the Zurich main train station via tram number 11 or 14 (Beckenhof stop), and that stop is about 50 yards from the front door or EMA - save cab fare by using the excellent tram system. Only downside to EMA: had to log on to the free Wifi daily (don't know why our devices couldn't "remember" the log-in - some weird technical glitch?). Overall, an excellent experience.

Room Tip: We had room 403, which looked out at part of Zurich, but the entire facility was quiet as far as I c...

I stayed 5 nights at EMA and I don't believe I could have found better value in Zurich. The rooms were very generous, the kitchen was well equipped, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom was enormous and spotless, and the view (Alps and river, from our suite at least) was lovely. Location is perfect -- the immediate neighborhood is quiet, but it's a short walk to the river (and laid-back riverside bar!) and Hauptbahnhof, and there is a tram stop just across the street. The staff are great -- very friendly and accommodating. My wife and our two-year-old were with me for the first three nights and the EMA team were great at managing any request, e.g. exchanging our son's bed for a cot. Wi-fi internet isn't free, but it is very cheap and very fast. There are no nasty telephone charges, either, and the rooms (at least, the one I stayed in) have Smart TVs with dozens of channels. I'd certainly stay there again.

We stayed at the EMA House for 2 nights in May. We were booked into a studio but got a surprising upgrade to a one bedroom. They closed the kitchen off but we wouldn't have used it anyway. The room was quite spacious. The bed was super comfortable and it had a great bathroom. There is no breakfast room so they gave us a menu to choose from and delivered our breakfast to our room. We really enjoyed eating at our leisure and the choices were excellent. We even had a small balcony with a great view!! The staff was friendly and most helpful!!! Location wise we were able to walk to do things. We took the train from the airport and then got on a tram that dropped us off right outside the door. This was not as easy as I thought it would be. We were very lucky to find someone who spoke English at the airport train terminal who directed us to the correct train and seating and also told us how to get the tram. This might have been easier had we not had large luggage.(if traveling with luggage you might consider a cab from the airport) We took a cab back to the airport. LIke all hotels, we could not check in when we arrived as it was mid morning, so keep that in mind. They did store our luggage. There were restaurants within walking distance. Also, German is the predominant language here so bring a dictionary!!! This was a great hotel and I would love to stay here again and certainly would recommend it!!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have a great view if you are on a high floor

We stayed 2 nights in the 2 bedroom serviced apartment located on Beckenhofstrasse a few minutes walk from the main EMA House on Nordstrasse. Coming into Zurich by train, this was an excellent location as it was only 2 tram stops away from the main train station. City centre is not far off by tram.

The apartment was awesome! It was modern and had all the amenities needed in a serviced apartment. In typical Swiss efficiency, everything in the apartment worked! They checked before we arrived. The place was clean when we checked in and the free wifi was great for our electronic devices. Toiletries supplied were plentiful and of good quality. There is no aircon but the weather was still cool so it was fine.

There were little touches that showed a lot of thought went in to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. For example, there was a welcome note on the table when we entered. There were Toblerone chocolates in the dining and bedrooms. Bedroom slippers and a power outlet adaptor were provided. There was a train schedule app on the huge Smart LED TV. There was even an umbrella for use in the event of inclement weather and shoehorns beside the door. Having stayed in numerous service apartments, EMA certainly has the small touches to make it a better experience - just like a top notch hotel!

Security-wise, it was also good. Although there was no reception desk at Beckenhofstrasse, entry to the building was by high security key. A safe was provided in our apartment and it was big enough to store our 3 laptops.

Service at reception was excellent from point of booking to check-out. However, reception desk closes at 8pm so but it was not too big a problem. A mobile number is provided if there is an emergency, The only thing we were not too pleased about was the housekeeping. When we came back in the evening, we found litter on the floor, the bedroom slippers in disarray and the bathroom towels not folded back. It was not as if we messed up the place; we had even washed, dried and kept the crockery and cutlery before we went out. We regretted leaving a tip in the apartment for the housekeeping person who didn't deserve it.

Notwithstanding the housekeeping problem, we enjoyed our stay at EMA very much and would stay there again next time in Zurich. It is a place we would recommend to friends.
