We went as a family for a night passing through Zurich. A couple blocks from being really central but right on a tram line and really only 2 blocks from the river and maybe 8 from the train station. So not bad.

Very spacious. Nice and clean. Really more like a long stay apartment / suite set up. A shade dated but really clean, very large and a steal for the price. The included breakfast was actually unbelievable. Delivered to your room when you wanted it.. Rolls, yogurt, eggs, meat, cheese, coffee, juice, etc.. All set up for you to hang out in your room.

There are no common facilities like many hotels.. No lobby to loiter in.. Reception closes down at 8 PM unless otherwise arranged..

So a bit different but a decent enough location close-ish to the train station, clean, big, comfortable, a great breakfast and a complete steal for the money in our opinion.

This hotel is more like an apartment building. We did not have use of the micro or utensils because we only stayed one night. Weird, but we got a great deal at $135 on booking.com, so we didn't expect much. The bed was large and comfortable. Although there was a busy street outside, we slept well. There was free wi-fi. We took the tram out front and transfered once for a total trip time of 4mins to the old town. You could walk there, but we were tired and unfamiliar. The old town shuts down early. Every restaurant is insanely priced! The views there are fantastic.

The EMA hotel is a no frills apartment style accommodation, it's main attraction is the spacious layout and rooms and wonderfully generous breakfast served continental style to your room at a nominated time. Breakfast includes meat, cheeses, bread rolls, croissants, cereals, juice, yoghurt with more than we could ever finish.

This hotel is best suited for people who are fairly self sufficient and don't need a lot of support from staff or little luxuries of a full service hotel. There is a concierge desk, open until 9pm each night, and all our questions and queries were answered efficiently.

Our family of four booked a junior suite, and we were upgraded to a larger suite on the third floor. The decor is basic, but comfortable. Our children slept in beds in the lounge room, whilst the king size bedroom was huge with ample storage. The bathroom is well appointed, shower over bath, and a large number of toiletries supplied. Daily servicing left everything immaculate. The key system took a little while to master but was fine once we worked it out. We used the laundry in the basement, which you need to book a time slot for.

The location is good, certainly not in the Old Town, but a comfortable 10 min walk along the street or down by the river. Access via trams are the 11 and 14 to stop Beckenhof. This is the best option as a taxi ride of sub 5 mins from the main train station with luggage cost us over 15CHF.

The street scape is austere, the building looks more like an office building. There is no real cafe culture nearby. There are a few restaurants nearby but they were not open during our stay. The Marriott hotel is nearby facing the river and has a Thai restaurant, another hotel has a Chinese cafe. The reception has some takeaway menus to order delivery.

There was a little street noise at night, not too loud. Room heating can be controlled individually, and can be switched off. Beds were low and a little soft.

Room Tip: River view is nice

My husband and I spent a long weekend in Zurich and stayed at the EMA house. The property was a reasonable walk from the main train station and sights. The front desk was welcoming and explained how everything in the room worked. The room itself was very large with a separate dining area (where breakfast was delivered and served each morning), sitting area, and bedroom. Complementary coffee/tea/cocoa are provided as well as robes and slippers. The beds are furnished with individual duvets. The television had BBC, CNN, and lots of other stations. There was also a long list of DVDs that can be borrowed from the front desk. The furniture in the room was dated, but the entire space and bathroom were spotlessly clean. The bathroom had both a shower and bathtub. The room was incredibly clean upon arrival and after being serviced each day. EMA house charged extra for internet, but once the fee was paid the service was very fast. Each day you choose your breakfast and have it delivered to the room. The choices were extensive and included coffee, tea, cheeses, meats, bread, juice, cereal, muesli, fruit, etc. There was a lot of documentation in the room on sights and how to use the facilities. The room was very quiet, and the remote controlled shutters provided privacy. The EMA house is not a luxury hotel, but it is an excellent choice for more self service travelers who value location, space, and amenities.

Unable mid-week to book my favored hotel (Hotel Krone Unterstrasse), I decided to book this hotel nearby.

Positives:
- for the price you'll probably get the biggest suite that you could imagine in Zurich for this price, with a separate kitchen, dining, lounge and TV-room, and a single bedroom - the suite would have been about 1000 square feet (110 square metres) in size
- it's well located next to Beckenhof tram station, which is just 2 tram stations from Bahnoffstrasse, the Zurich central railway station
- they have a decent breakfast, which comes prepared and delivered to your door, at a time nominated by you, and set-up in your dining room by the kitchen staff (otherwise there is no dining room or food service facility whatsoever)
- I had good views down the hill to the river and across to the city - there were many windows

Negatives:
- the decoration is basic, but clean. Don't expect plush luxuries. The carpet was "hairy" blue office-like acrylic carpet squares, parts of which looked worn. The kitchen drawers and cupboards had locks and notes affixed to the effect that "kitchen utensils and cutlery are not part of your room plan"
- they are low-tech when it comes to the security system - they give you a black leather pouch with 2 "skeleton" keys which look as if they could open a Chubb bank safe. One of these is to be deployed to 1. open the front glass doors 2. open the lifts and 3. open the front door of the suite. The other is actually to open a safe in the bedroom, which is not your normal hotel safe, it looks as if it is something reconditioned from a jewellery shop colured "gun-metal green" and which is double the normal size of a hotel safe
- what other people said about "no service" is very true - there isn't any to speak of after 9 pm as the check-in counter closes, and you are left to your own devices (see my experience below)
- the shower system didn't work, and I ended up having a bath instead; the drains were clogged
- the suite is basically too big, unwelcoming and with cheap chain store furniture and a tired look to be a comfortable hotel room. Freakishly, the room had several "doors to nowhere", which the hotel staff explained were 1. a guest toilet and 2. an adjoining door to the next apartment. There was also a wardrobe door which refused to budge open, and so, I never ended up knowing what was behind it. All of this lent the place a "Bates Hotel" feel which I wasn't thrilled with, as a single traveller
- the biggest and disconcerting incident was when I returned at about 10pm at night, and tried to use, for the first time, the bunch of keys which I was given - I got into the wrong lift firstly and then ended up in the buildings basement, 3 floors underground. I then somehow got back to ground level and took the right lift up to the 3rd floor. When I got to my suite, the door wouldn't open and I tried right-left; right-left for about 5 minutes, to no avail. After this I went down to the lobby, and sat there and looked for an after-hours number (as the counter was closed at 9pm) so that I could get some "door-opening" assistance. There was no number on the walls to call; and no-one, not even another guest to turn to for help. I remember that there was a card with some numbers which I had been given on check-in but this was locked-up in the suite. I went back to try the keys again after sitting 15 minutes in the lobby, and on the 3rd attempt, somehow, the door opened
- I had checked in at 8.30 pm, and never seen the place in daylight. The mystery doors which led to nowhere, and which wouldn't open, and the episode with the non-opening front door left me "spooked" and I felt most comfortable, with the bedside light opened and the curtains of the bedroom thrown open so that some street lights could get in, and the entire suites lights were left open for the whole night

- in brief, of all the hotel rooms which I have ever stayed in for some reason, this place left me "spooked" and as a single traveller, I would never stay in this place again.
- I feel that it is fine as a longer stay hotel, if you were based in Zurich and needed a small apartment to hole-up in (say) for 3 months which you might fill-up with Ikea furniture to give it a homey-feel. However it doesn't satisfy as an alternative for a real hotel, as it is absolutely spartan with a "highway motel" decor and feel, and an antiquated security system which locks you out, just as it is intended to keep strangers out

We stayed in an apartment in their EMA Classic loaction, 50 m from the Nordstrasse address.
The positives first: good loaction, 3 minutes from tram, 2 tram stops to Central Train Station, large living room area, everything you needed in the kitchen. Our apartment had a balcony which was a plus.
Negatives: we reserved rooms at both locations through booking.com pending a decision on how big our group was going to be. One of the reservations had a no penalty clause up to the arrival date. We cancelled that one one week before our arrival only to find out that the full amount of the payment due for our stay had already been blocked on the credit card used for the reservation. It took 4 weeeks to unblock it. On the other reservation, the one we used, they first blocked the full amount of the payment and then they processed the payment again instead of offsetting it against the guarantee. Again, it took four weeks to unblock the guarantee. So, beware when you reserve with them if you are not absolutely sure you will use the reservation and make sure they offset the payment against the guarantee.
