Let's address the elephant in the room - Zurich is expensive. Food, accomodation, activities - all expensive. With this in mind we were looking for a budget hotel to spend the night in at the end of our Alps driving tour. The Hottingen fit the bill as it was in our price range so we booked in. It is well located - perhaps twenty minutes' walk to town - on a main street and though it can be hard to spot since it blends in to the surrounding neighbourhood, it's not difficult to locate. The area it is in is quite quiet and there isn't an awful lot to see nearby, but a tram stop is only about a hundred metres away so getting into town that way is easy too. The property is an old building that has been totally renovated and it is surprisingly chic considering what we've paid. I've seen Hiltons and Westins with less trendy and modern design than this, which is impressive. The rooms are very nice and modern and were a pleasure to come back to after a long day on the cobblestones. The restaurant where breakfast is served is also modern and nice to enjoy the wide selection of foods available in. Reading the other reviews regarding poor service from staff, I can see where this may have come from, but the staff encountered on our visit (including the lady with long dark hair) were friendly and helpful and I personally didn't encounter any difficulties with them. We treated them nicely and got the same in return, but you never know, maybe they were having a bad day.
This is a decent hotel to stay at for the price rooms go for, especially if you get breakfast included. It is clean and modern and perfectly fine to stay in if you want to save some money in expensive Zurich.
