“Great design hotel - botique - funny environment”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2009

The Greulich is built in a residential area not directly in the City Centre but close to it. It is a special kind of design hotel with a bar and restaurant and a stunning conference room all together in the front part of the building whereas the rooms are situation in the back courtyard surrounded by design trees! The rooms are just fantastic - all (!) in white with the bath areas integrated in the room. It's one of the best design hotels I have seen.

The Greulich is one of my recommendations for Zürich as it is not so mainstream as most of the others.

a very beautiful, stylish and friendly hotel. from the first moment you fell at home. The staff is extraordinary, every wish can they fulfill. The rooms are bright but still very cosy, the food is great.

After long looking for an affordable design hotel in Zürich we ended up in Greulich hotel. It was a very good decision: nice rooms, nice design, friendly service, good bar.... So, it really lived up to our expectations! Only negative, it is a bit out of the city centre. And, don't be surprised by the bathroom....

The Greulich is supposed to be the best design hotel in Zurich, but as we discovered there is something uncomfortable about too much design.

The hotel is unlike others in that it doesn't have the grand formal entrance, - it is more like arriving at a bar and the bar areas are quite nice (if a little smoky). The restaurant is a little tragic and service is seemingly provided by 18-year-old hospitality graduates, but the good food makes up for average service in most cases.

Leaving the public areas you are guided to your room through a corridor which enters an outdoor courtyard. The rooms are located behind huge steel doors off a central concrete walkway which is covered like a military/industrial aicraft hangar.

Inside, the rooms are stark and white with a small bathroom separated from the main room by a frosted plastic barrier. The shower requires an engineering degree to operate and is ridiculously situated inside the same room as the toilet. It is impossible not to get the entire bathroom floor wet while you are negotiating the various glass doors to climb in and out of this insane space. The ventilation system sounds like you are inside a Boeing 767 with the engines on.

The sterile interiors make you feel like you are living in someone's medical cabinet or a hospital waiting for the knock on the door when your next dose of medication is delivered. I know art in hotel rooms is usually pretty wrong, but stark, white walls are another thing - I was tempted to get in on the 'design' act and create my own masterpiece on this bland, blank canvas.

The TV was clearly chosen for its design qualities - it is about a 15 inches high cube with rounded edges on its plastic casing - making it appear very much like the room itself. It was placed on the floor so appeared even smaller than it was. OK, so we don't need to watch TV while travelling, but the Greulich is located so far away from everything, Zurich is uninviting in terms of weather and taxis are so incredibly expensive that sometimes a night in is all there is!

Views are negligible - there are none - and people in the buildings behind can see right into your room. The various switches for opening the blinds and part of the roof (!) take a while to master. On the up-side, the interiors are light, the floors are heated, the bed is magnificently comfortable with quality linens and the large integrated desk is great.

A challenging hotel in an inferior location, but probably not bad for the business traveller...

  • Liked — The bed.
  • Disliked — The sterile environment - everywhere!

My partner and I stayed in a junior suite for two nights for 360 CHF per night. These suites were bi-level with a small lounge area and desk at a higher level than the bed and bathroom. The room was quite small, with white spartan walls and minimum furniture. To be honest it had a very 'hospital' feel to it and was not welcoming or warm.
There was no a/c, I am not sure if Zurich ever gets that hot anyway, but there were windows in the ceiling which opened up for some fresh air.
We had a lovely view of the garden but unfortunately so did the apt building opposite us which could obviously see right into the room.
There is free internet provided via cable (which you must request at the front desk and return the next day or you will be charged a fee).
The bed was firm and comfortable and there is no mini bar or fridge to store your own drinks or to purchase. There was a tiny tv with a few english speaking channels such as cnn and german mtv.

The main problem was the location and the bathroom setup.
The hotel is located metres from a a train track and the surrounding area seemed quite ordinary and there were no decent restaurants within walking distance. The tram no 8 is ideally located a few minutes away which takes you straight to the main shopping areas of Zurich, however the Seefeld area is far nicer and I would recommend travellers stay in that hip area rather than near the Greulich.

The bathroom of the hotel was a malfunction in design. There was a separate long bath which was lovely but the shower was small and thin and shared the same space as the toilet.
The first time my partner used the shower it flooded the toilet and bathroom area as the drainage was so poor and the shower so powerful. It was pretty funny at the time but the bathroom is part of the room, not located separately therefore the bed was perilously close to being water logged too.

The hotel breakfast was awful, 25 CHF for a very ordinary breakfast - a few pastries, jams, yogurt and a few slices of cold meats. Zurich is incredibly expensive for food, but I would rather go to Starbucks than eat at the Greulich ( and that is not saying much).

The staff were quite nice at the front desk if not a little cool. Their English was okay but I got the feeling they didn't really get alot of English speaking guests.
It was okay value for money in a city with very few decent modern hotel choices, however we moved to the Lady's First Design in the Seefeld area and we found that stay much more pleasant.
Location really is everything.

  • Liked — Modern design, very clean
  • Disliked — The location was poor and the bathroom poorly designed

When traveling, we (my husband and I) usually seek out the modern design end of the spectrum which can sometimes disappoint with fussy fixtures, complicated lighting/heating and irritating staff. To our delight, not the case here!

From the rooms to the restaurant, all was exceptionally good. The room for two had a seriously comfortable bed with yummy linens. Lots of options to open windows for air, but use screens to keep privacy while letting in light. The high design still is very easy to use and comfortable.

In addition to the room, the hotel interior courtyard is unusual with understated beauty. We arrived in the afternoon to find a Tai-Ch'i group practicing amongst the birch trees.

The restaurant, whether you're staying at the hotel or not, is worth a visit. Both for dinner and breakfast, it proved to have some surprisingly good food. The cured meats and tapas rival some of the best I've had in Spain.

As mentioned in another review, the English of the staff isn't always 100% fluent, however it was a relief to not be pandered to as a tourist - you do have to ask for things in English and be clear you don't speak German (for example, you're presented with a German menu, but if asked they also have it in English and French). There is no assumption that everyone is an American or British tourist.

However, having said that, all staff we very competent and helpful when asked. You just have to realise that in Switzerland you're in a different country with a different idea of service and hotel culture. A highly recommended hotel. Will definitely return.

Location
Zurich 4 is not exactly the centre of Zurich, however, one can easily take the bus, the tram (number 8) or a taxi into town.

Reception
Check-in and -out efficient, friendly and very professional.
Escorted to my room on check-in.

Room
Had a junior suite, which was furnished in an interesting, Asian-/yin/yang-inspired way. Glass from floor to ceiling facing the 'courtyard' of the hotel. A white blind (automatic) gave the room perfect privacy.
Floor in the entire room heated (great when it's chilly outside).
No separate bathroom; instead the bathroom was part of the bedroom separated by a frosted wall/divider. Great layout.
Comfortable bed. Pillows of a nice size and thickness.
Amenities in bathroom included vanity kit, shampoo and shower gel (no body lotion). Bath robe and slippers.
Lighting adjusted with dimmer.
ADSL through cable in-room free of charge.
TV rather small and on the floor of the sofa area.

Restaurant
Great service by the waiter. Interesting Catalan-inspired, slow-cooking menu with even more interesting wines. Worth a try! But, it's not cheap.
