“Not good value, poor customer service, this is not the Marriott I love........”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2007

First, the positives.

The location near public transportation (the #11 tram) takes you right into the city near the train station. The stop is directly across the street. If you prefer, you can take the shuttle to the airport and connect t trains there. The shuttle is complementary and runs every 1/2 hour. Exceptionaly convenient.

The rooms are spacious and seem recently updated. Fluffy duvets, lots of extra pillows, etc. Rooms were also very clean and are spacious. These amenities may be exclusive to the concierge floor, which brings me to the first issue...

Problems:

We called and requested adjoining rooms (we exceeded maximum occupancy for one room), which they could not honor until we checked in (we were traveling with children). Upon check in, we were offered 2 rooms approximately 5 rooms apart on the same floor. But, after driving for 12 hours and getting lost in the construction surrounding the hotel, we had to take them. The rooms were on the concierge floor, although we did not request the upgrade, it was very nice. This isn't an uncommon experience since we stay at an average of 20+ Marriotts per year and are Elite-whatever members of Marriott.
Anywho....Sunday afternoon, when they put out beverages, we were stopped at the concierge desk and denied access because it "wasn't included in our room rate". Fair enough, but good service would dictate the terms to the customer on check-in to spare them the embarassment of being turned away upon entrance. We called down to ask how much to add onto the room rate to access the concierge privileges and it was a remarkable 170CH per room. Yikes.

Internet access...in room access is 39CHF for 24 hours. A bit pricey, but a necessary evil for business issues. Reallynot competitive at all. Hands down the most expensive internet charge I encountered this year in 11 countries.

Hotel advertised (and confirmed by Marriott booking agent) that the hotel had pool and fitness center. We were told AFTER we checked in that both the pool and fitness center were closed.
The day we checked out, we overheard guests on the elevator discuss that there was a small, "alternative" fitness center established on a different floor. Again, this information (both the closing and the alternative site) should have been discussed at check-in.

Really, this was a substandard Marriott (and hotel) experience, especially considering the cost. This is the first time I have ever
been unsatisfied with a hotel sta, including Marriotts. Not a good value really.

I was impressed with the quality of our rooms for the price of the hotel. It was rather pricey for an airport hotel but well worth it to have a shuttle to take you to the airport instead of a cab!
Nice goose down comforters and fluffy pillows. The restaurant had pretty decent food as well.

We stayed at the Renaissance in Zurich at the beginning and at the end of our month long trip to Italy since we flew into and out of Switzerland. We are really glad that we found this place!
First, the hotel has a very convenient shuttle that runs every 20-30 minutes to the airport. It is a large van that holds lots of people and their luggage. The hotel is maybe 10 minutes from the airport on this shuttle. This hotel is not real convenient to the city center where everything is happening but there there is a tram stop (Glattpark) right across the street! The tram will take you to the city in about 20 minutes. It's a nice, quiet, clean tram and it makes stops at Rail City (Train station) Lake Zurich or wherever you need to go. It is easiest to buy your tram tickets at the hotel front desk because the self serve machines are very confusing and do not accept bills, only coins. For 5 of us that was A LOT of coins!
On the front end of our trip we were put in rooms on the 3rd floor. They were very clean and nice and we didn't have any problems with rooms and the staff is so friendly and helpful. They speak many languages fluently we were happy and all was good.
At the end of our trip we were placed on the 4th floor! Wow, there was a huge difference! This is the club level and everything had been kicked up a notch! The beds were plush. Comfy pillows billowy comforters, turn down service, more and nicer bath products and the club lounge. (I must add that a lot of our happiness came from the simple things that we take for granted in the states. After a month in Italy we were so happy to have washcloths!! Towels that were large and soft and didn't smell like vinegar! Beds with a box spring that give when you sit down.) Anyway, the club lounge had a very nice complimentary happy hour with lots of snacks and sweets and a very nice breakfast. I think the breakfast was only on weekdays?? Check the hours on the sign that is posted because neither last for real long. But it worked great for us!
There was ONE problem! In rooms 419 & 420 the air did not work well. We could hear it blowing but it would not cool. It was so hot and humid the first night that we had trouble sleeping. The next morning we spoke with the front desk and they sent a mechanic immediately! He adjusted something in the ceiling hoping that would work. Unfortunately it did not help. We tried to sleep with the window open but right outside the window is a train track and the trains are quite loud! When the window is closed the rooms are so well insulated that the trains truly do not disturb you. Including hall and neighbor noises. We didn't seem to have that problem on the front end of the trip so I don't know if the third floor is on a different A/C unit or if it was just cooler outside a month earlier? (The weather seemed to be about the same.)
The restaurants down in the lobby all had good food. The Asian Place is overpriced but the food was good. Same for the breakfast buffet (Chf 35 ea.) but at least it included Prosecco. The servers are all very friendly and helpful.
Zurich is a quaint, clean place and we enjoyed our visit very much. I think my teenagers enjoyed the 3 days in Zurich better than Italy. On Sunday everything in Zurich is closed except for the airport mall. We caught the shuttle out there and back and had a great time! We got a good deal on a watch out there.
*Secret money saving tip! I called the hotel to book a room and the best price I could talk them into was $155 USD. Well worth it but if you go to Priceline and put in a request for a 4 star in the Galattbrugg area of Zurich... I offered $100. per room and got it! This hotel is the ONLY 4 star in Glattbrugg so it is the one you will get! ;-)

  • Liked — Very clean rooms and very friendly staff
  • Disliked — The A/C on the 4th floor!

I booked one night at this hotel through Priceline and paid a total of $160 (USD). It was a welcome change from the small cramped European hotel rooms we had been staying in (for the same price). The lobby was beautiful, with a koi pond and restaurant. The room was just as gorgeous! It was like staying in a US hotel, rather than a European one. The pool, fitness area, and hot tub were wonderful. Parking cost $24 per day. It took us about 20 mintues by tram to get to downtown Zurich, and the tram stop is in front of the hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in or near Zurich.

This hotel seems to be a very popular place for corporate meetings and overnight for tour companies as its occupational rate are quite high most of the time.

I got a king bed suite on the 3rd floor with separate bedroom and living room. The decoration is decidedly aging in the 1980s and mostly in brown. Cozy perhaps but not very lively.

The bathroom is of a decent size although a bit tight for an airport hotel. The amenities are a mixed of the standard Renaissance and some strange manufacturer that I did not recognized. My guess is that the hotel had some issues with the standard amenities stock.

The Asian restaurant serves very decent food for the price. The bar had an happy hours for the World Cup for the weeks that I was there.

This hotel is about 10-15 minutes by shuttle bus to the airport. Its location is not an ideal place as there are only an Italian restaurant nearby. If you are looking for more decent place to eat, you would need to take a bus to Oerlikon. Central Zurich is reachable via the train from Oerlikon or Opfikon in 15-20 minutes. The walk from the hotel to Opfikon station takes about 15 minutes.

This is a good place to stay if you need to catch a flight but not so much for a tourist.

I stayed 2 nights at the hotel.

The company had reserved a normal room. I asked for a king size bed when I checked in. They kindly upgraded me to a suite (#104).

I have the same excellent comments as the other reviewers. It is a very convenient hotel, and the staff is very friendly and efficient. The location was fine for me (I was in a seminar at the hotel).

They have a gym open 24 hours.

The only little reserve: you have to pay the Internet from the first minute you use it: 0.39 SFr per minute.

We stayed here for 1 night November 2nd on our way back to the US. The hotel has a free airport shuttle that runs every 30 minutes at baggage claim. Keep in mind the hotel is not located in downtown Zurich. It's kind of between the airport and Zurich. But I think it's an excellent location if you have an early or mid-morning flight.

This hotel is clean, comfortable and beautiful. All the amenities of a Renaissance and a wonderful desk staff. They can convert your Euros to Swiss Francs at the reception desk. Hint-Zurich is very expensive!

We arrived mid morning and our rooms were ready. There is a tram you can catch into town a short walk from the hotel. Buy a Tram Pass from reception. (Don't worry about walking to the tram it's under the bridge behind the hotel and through a park but very, very safe.) In fact, we found Zurich to be wonderfully safe and so clean. We visited the famous Odeon Bar, Lake Zurich and Old City later that afternoon.

Our overall experience was very good. We'd definitely stay here again!!!
