This is a goodish hotel, first class location, nice rooms, good bathrooms but several points need attention and it is a pity these are not addressed because this has the potential to be a very good hotel.
First impressions are important. Ours were bad. We booked our accommodation more than three months in advance through an agent and paid in full. Three weeks before our arrival, I sent the hotel a fax asking them to confirm that they had the reservation and requesting a room not affected by traffic noise. They did not reply. I sent a second fax. They did not reply to that either. I began to wonder what sort of place I was dealing with and had to make an intercontinental telephone call to check on the reservation. The young girl who answered said she could not see any reservation. When I began to protest, she passed me to a colleague who immediately confirmed the booking and said that they had noted the request for a quiet room, thus proving that they had received the faxes. So why did they not reply?
We arrived in a rain storm and had to manage our bags ourselves from the taxi and into the foyer. Once inside out of the rain with the luggage, we were asked if we would like some help. Well, yes, five minutes ago, please. At check-in, two of the four people behind the reception desk were "Trainees". The one assigned to us had to constantly ask her colleague for guidance. It hardly inspired confidence. After checking-in, we made our way to the room down a long corridor with a badly soiled carpet, plain white walls and grey doors. It seemed like an institution, however, the room turned out to be a lovely surprise - big, bright with lovely beds, nice furniture and every facility one could hope for. Unfortunately there were no instructions for the Nespresso-type coffee machine. The bathroom was a bit small for a big bloke, but well equipped. In short, an excellent place to stay.
As the rain continued all evening, we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant which styled itself "Casual Asian Dining". As Asian cuisine extends from Turkey to Japan, maybe we should have been cautious. Several items on the menu claimed to be "in the Thai style" and we settled for those. Only one other table was occupied so the staff were not rushed. Nothing that we ordered had any taste at all or bore any resemblance to oriental cuisine. The spring rolls were utterly bland. A green curry had no taste of curry and my wok fried chicken was shocking. I know enough about cooking and food science to know that this was precooked chicken, probably steamed, and just tossed in a wok with a glutinous brown sauce, which was tasteless, to heat through. What was "Casual" was the attitude of the serving staff who clattered and banged crockery, cutlery and utensils non-stop. Apart from the poor food, the restaurant is unattractive and badly laid out with the most uncomfortable little wooden chairs.
Breakfast the following morning was even worse. Breakfast is advertised as 6.30am till 11am, but we found at 8.40am that the buffet was severely depleted. The cold cuts tray was empty, there were only a few strips of processed cheese left and just three small bread rolls were lying on the bottom of the bread basket (which was on a high shelf above eye and shoulder height). The buffet was laid out in a corner and one slow person could block access. The serving girls did not seem to think that they had to replenish anything. There were several unoccupied tables, but they were all littered with used crockery and half-eaten food. No effort was being made to clear them. For the rest of our stay, we had breakfast elsewhere.
To sum up, a good place to stay, but avoid eating here.
