“Decent, but horrible noise and stuffy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

We stayed here for two nights over the week-end.

It is decently priced, but there are quite some down sides to it.
If you have a room facing the street, the noise outside of cars and trams make it diffcult to sleep through. It also gets extremly stuffy so the choice of heat or noise is not easy.

I can't understand why they don't invest in airconditioning.

The room was ok, the bed comfortable, enough space, with a small work desk, good choice of tv channels. Coffee machine is a nice touch too.

The carpet was all stained, as was the ceiling, but apart from that, very clean.

The bathroom was fine, with space and a decent shower.

An average hotel in all and good for budget travellers.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not on the street side.

This hotel is next to tram lines so its really difficult to sleep until midnight and after that mosquitos would not let you sleep. Room was ok but it was really warm. No table fan provided. Opening the window will make you feel as if sleeping on road.

Room Tip: Try to take the room which are not facing the road, dont know if they have such rooms.

The hotel is located close to Zurich Bahnof and the lake. Rooms are having kitchenettes, Nespresso machines and free Wi-Fi. Very close to the main part of town with the tram right out side our door if needed, which is both good and bad. There is no Air-conditioning or Fans in the rooms and if you open windows in night trams' noise will make if difficult to sleep. But more positive than negative and excellent staff made up for any downside.

Room Tip: Try to take room on where noise can be less.

Excellent location, very good value. Close to many restaurants, but with its own kitchenette and very near to two supermarkets. Can be a little noisy, especially if you are facing the street (and are on the first floor). Nonetheless an excellent and very reasonable choice. staff were very friendly and did their best to help, look up places and arrange any thing you need. Overall, an excellent choice for budget travellers, business people who like some additional space and families.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the front are much quieter.

Located a 10 minute walk from the train station, the river and lake, and the downtown, it is a good place from which to see the sights of the city.

The room is quite nice and having a little fridge, hot plate and microwave makes it easy to prepare for a couple of meals a day. A great advantage given the price of restaurant food here.

The room is definitely only suitable for 2 people. The main bed was fine but the third bed was a roll away cot with a thin mattress and a missing slat. It may be ok for a small child but definitely not an adult..

Zurich is likely the most expensive city in Europe, although interesting and with easy access to the alps, we probably should have considered another Swiss location. Zurich is more of a business destination then a tourist destination.

Room Tip: The tram is just down the street and is noisy until it finishes its route at 12:30. Aim for a back l...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

Myself and my wife Deepti, a middle-aged couple stayed in Hotel Astor, Haldenstrasse, Zurich during the period June 5-9, 2012. Before describing my experience, I must state what were my priorities, when searching for a good hotel in Zurich. Well, those were : Cleanliness, an attached well-equipped Kitchenette, Reasonable price (in very costly Zurich), Decent Surroundings, Sufficient Space, Ease of approachability from the Airport as well as from the Zurich HB railstation (and the city centre).

In this context, we have found Hotel Astor to be an astounding hotel to stay. The location is very approachable. We are thankful to one advice that I read on tripadvisor: "...if you have time, travel to the hotel from the airport by tram...." I am sorry I do not remember the name of the advisor - but this was worth it. Book your tram ticket with the credit card from the Information Centre at the Zurich airport (in the building outside the arrival building of the airport marked "Airport Central". Discover the tram station (very easy...just near the bus station). Do not forget to get your tram tickets "punched" at the tram station. And yes, by the tickets to "Haldenegg" station - oneway CHF 6:40 for tram no 10. It will take a decent 45 minutes, but have a look on the Zurich city and take snaps !! Do not worry about the station...clear announcements are made in the tram as well as time remaining to a specific station is also clearly visible in a monitor display.Get down at Haldenegg. Remember tram 10 takes a turn downhill at Haldenegg and so if you are coming from the airport, you will have to walk about 100 meters to the hotel. There is another Haldenegg station just in front of the hotel, but the tram from the airport does not go there - as mentioned it takes a left turn downhill before that on its way to Zurich HB station. Yes, do not worry about where to keep your luggage. During non-peak hours at least, there is ample space in the tram to do so. No questions asked or frowned-looks casted!!!

We reached the hotel at 12:00 hrs and the checkin time mentioned is 14:00 hrs. But the reception was kind enough to allot us a vacant room, straightway. No payments, at the time of checkin, unlike what I have experienced in hotels in India, Hongkong, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. There is an elevator available, carry your luggage to the room.

The rooms are clean with a kitchenette with an espresso maker, an oven, necessary utensils, a small basin in the passage - just as you enter the room. The room size is sufficient - though not VERY big but not tool small too - with a cupboard, a safe, a TV (with about 15 channels), two chairs and a working-desk-platform with ample drawers, good lighting and VERY clean.

I did read on trip advisor that I should not opt for a front room because of the noise from the trams....but well, for somebody coming from an Indian cosmopolitan city, the place is very very calm. Yes, there is an occasional noise because of the tram, but if you close the windows it is fine. What would bother one more is the direct sunlight coming through the white curtains upto 09.30 pm, yes upto 21:30 hrs, in June and that irritated us - the go-to-bed-early chaps.

We are strict vegetarians and the fact that there is an oven in the room helped a lot. We carried lot of ready-to-cook packets viz. MTR, ITC etc - just put them in oven and survived easily on that. In this context, my wife Deepti liked the hotel a lot. The hotel maid even cleans the dirty utensils the other day.

As mentioned earlier, the hotel is very near to the city-centre. Just move out, walk left down the hill, turn right and you would see the Zurich HB - the main railway station. The main railway stations in Switzerland are like shopping malls and hence you would get whatever you want. In fact, the Swiss currency at the exchange centre in this station turns out to be much cheaper due to low commission charged. Then, there is Coop Superstore on the way and again you do not need to go anywhere else for milk, curd, waterbottles (in case you need - otherwise the tap water in Switzerland is drinkable), vegetables, chocolates etc.......at reasonable rates.

Well, this review is about the hotel principally and so would stop here....more about moving around in another review that I intend to upload later.
