“Family owned attention to detail and staff dedicated to customer care - and a stone throw from the opera.”
Needing to spend a couple of nights in Zürich, which I had visited on business about three times previously, I wanted something more comfortable yet "reasonably" affordable and, if possible, close to the opera house. Trip Advisor's advice was helpful: Hotel Opera's reviews are positive and, more importantly, where criticisms were levelled, the management response was clear, helpful and welcoming of comment. Booking through an on-line agency was easy and a slight discount on the rack rate. Reception staff were informally welcoming and, without prompting, explained the free wired broadband in the room, and offered, unsolicited, an electrical adaptor . This suited me perfectly, but the alternative chargeable wifi may be an irritation to those with wifi only devices.
I had chosen a double standard room for single use (average cost £223 per night - CHF 697). Spacious, small balcony, furnished with rather plain style. My only issue was the iron bedstead-style headboard - rather hard on the head when sitting up reading in bed!
The bathroom, though smallish was more than adequate and elegant and modern - excellent forceful over-bath shower. I was disappointed to find that soap was only liquid, but then I dislike liquid soaps.
Breakfast is extra (at CHF 26) and is advertised (but only in German in the in-room hotel brochure) as "Champagne". I saw nobody partaking and doubt if champagne is much in demand at 8am midweek. Perhaps a cheaper breakfast without it could be considered. As a buffet, breakfast was adequate though, as usual, it is impossible to keep scrambled eggs soft in on a hot buffet. And on my first morning there were no explanatory leaflets about what was available.
One pleasant surprise was the glass of wine offered one evening as I was leaving for dinner. It allowed me to chat with the clearly loyal and dedicated staff. That is reflected in the bi-lingual house magazine of this family owned hotel and its sister hotel across the road, the Ambassador, and which is dedicated to describing many of the staff. That is worth a read as the staff are multinational and long-serving and dedicated to the customer, something easily noted by the latter.
The restaurant, à l'Opéra, is in the Ambassador, and provides a superb meal attentively served. I believe room service also comes from there. Neither dinner nor even the cost of the room can be described as inexpensive, but that is more related to the high costs of the city and the country. It is good value because the attention to most detail and to the customer is significant. It is not part of a multinational chain: it is family owned and that shows and it works, for me. And the opera is a few minutes walk away.
