“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2010

My wife and I stayed 1 night in January. The front desk, despite having a mix up with our booking, was friendly, courteous and helpful, solving our problem efficiently. Our room was excellent - large, very well furnished, comfortable and splendidly equipped. The room had as well as the large double bed a Bang Olufson stereo and radio, a large flat screen TV, a desk, chairs and sofa and coffee table. The room looked out onto Rennweg. The staff were friendly and efficient, without being obtrusive. Our only complaint was the breakfast, not included in the room rate, which was rather poor and pretentious and for what it was very expensive. We would certainly recommend staying in the Widder, but suggest you can get a better breakfast elsewhere - given the cost of staying in the hotel, saving money is not likely to be an issue, but quality of breakfast is and this very badly let the overall quality of the hotel down. We did not use the hotel restaurant, so have no views on it.

Our room was spacious with an excellent bed, a wonderful bathroom but rather uncomfortable furniture. The hotel bar and lounges were not very inviting and we did not spend much time there. Ther breakfast room serves a regular continental breakfast at CHF 24. With a room rate of CHF 745 I really believe a much better breakfast should have been included. The staff was excellent but I would have expected nothing less. All in all a good stay but at that price you certainly have many other options in Zurich.

The location of the hotel is very special, surounded by a wonderful and diverse restaurant/ bar/ cafe scene and many shops and boutiques. Basically a pedestrian area.
The arrival and check in was spot on, very professional, efficient and friendly. The Penthouse Suite with a roof terrasse is a hihglight as an accommodation and who can afford it, I would recommend it. The interiour of the room is classic, but all high tech, including Bang and Olufsen TV and Sound Systems in all rooms. The Widder Bar is a place to hang out where not only hotel guests meet, but also locals come to enjoy the great cocktails and the live jazz music. Certainly a place to go back to.

Coming by car from Basel where we had a bad experience at Les Trois Rois, our GPS couldn't precisely locate the Widder. Reaching it by car is not easy if you are not familiar with Zurich. However, what an experience already in the lobby. This hotel is spectacular, most rooms are amazing, service is perfect. We had a good experience with the restaurant, except for breakfast since there is no buffet and the meal has to be ordered based on the menu. But the quality is top.
The hotel location is perfect, in a pedestrian street, very close to the Bahnhofstrasse.
This is a real 5 star hotel. Excellent.

We arrived at the Widder Hotel late having been on a delayed flight and were tired and hungry. The receptionist showed us to our fabulous room (308) and organised to have my husband's creased shirt ironed immediately so that we could go straight out for a meal. Everywhere of interest was within walking distanceof the hotel and the bar was busy with a cool 'buzz' and great music. Both members of reception staff were unbelievably helpful and never tired of our questions! The breakfast staff also fell over themselves to be efficient and the food was very good. I would definitely go back to the Widder although my only disappointment was that there were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2009

As a long time fan of the Baur Au Lac in Zurich ( which is still a great hotel )... I have to say it has been surpassed as Zurichs best hotel ! We stayed twice in January 2009 for a total of twelve nights and could hardly fault the hotel on either occassion.

A lot has been said about the design of the hotel and I am one that is not usually thrilled with the mix of modern and old as it very often doesn't seem to fit. At the Widder though the blend is seemless and probaly the best example of using modern to accentuate the old I have seen.

The facilities are as you would expect from a deluxe 5* hotel. Each room is a different shape and size and uniquely decorated which makes it difficult to comment on all the rooms. However we are a family and used a deluxe double and two single rooms during our stay. Each room was beautifully appointed and upkept. They were light, airy and large.

The fact that the hotel is small ( only 50 odd rooms ) and made up of historic houses means that it is a labyrinth of corridors and small public rooms...this has the effect of making you feel as if you are staying in a 'private house' rather than a hotel. This is further propagated by the fact that the staff seem as if they are there just for you.....which brings me to one of the main points of why the Widder is so good.....the service.

It is probably the most friendly 5* hotel we have stayed in and we have stayed in a lot ! The front desk, concierge and porters all made us feel as if we were the only guests they had and nothing was to much trouble and it was as if we were guests in their 'house'...as another writer on this site mentioned, they all seem very proud of the hotel and so they should be !

The other great thing about the Widder is its location, right on the Rennweg with everything right by your front door. Most of Zurichs best shops and restaurants all walking distance away along cobbled medievil streets....Zurich doesn't get much better than this... ( maybe a view of the lake but you can't have everything )

In relation to food ...the breakfast is excellent and served in a very modern and bright breakfast room. Thankfully it doesn't have the usual 'buffet selection' so common the world over these days but instead a lovely a la carte breakfast menu. The service is prompt and friendly, the coffee great and the food is straight forward and of great quality.

The main restaurant at the Widder is divided into two infdividually decorated rooms. Both lovely, but to my taste the 'smoking dining room ' is the nicer of the two ( shame we hate smoking ) The menu is a choice of three different 'degustation menus' and while it tries hard it just misses on most dishes. With so many great restaurants serving 'local' food nearby it is a a bit of a waste spending an evening having 'try hard' French food that you can get at most competent 5* hotels around the world. It is a shame as the restaurant is probably the weak point of the hotel but really should be the highlight. A hotel like this deserves at least a 2* michelin restaurant.

The Widder Bar is famous and a great venue and the small casual restaurant didn't really tempt us.

Overall the management and their team are doing a fantastic job and their byline of "At Home at The Widder" is very appropriate..we can't wait for our next visit to Zurich and we will definately be heading straight back to the Widder !
