“Quirky and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

The staff were helpful and attentive and the attention to detail in the room - including little packets of nuts and apricots, and a fig and water put on the bedside table - made the whole experience very enjoyable. A bit pricey, but then everything in Switzerland is more pricey than in the UK.

First how anyone could rate this hotel average must either be hyper critical or stay exclusively at hotels I never get to go to lol. This place was great
Location. In heart of Altstadt. Surrounded by very walkable lanes full of high end shops, old churches and interesting sights. Short walk to lake and station
Rooms. Mine was amazing. spacious, tastefully designed with sleeping area and sitting area and an amazing private rooftop balcony where I spent several hours watching the town , while reading with a nice glass of wine. It's hard to see how it could be better whole hotel was beautiful and nicely laid out
Service. Exceptional. It's the kind of professional service where they aren't over friendly or patronizing but generally interested in you having a great stay I find that relaxing and enjoyable. I don't want to be bugged but I like being taken care of and if I need something it happens quickly and effectively. I was certainly happy I hopped a train from Frankfurt for a long weekend here !

This is my second review of this hotel. Since some years have passed I have decided to rate it again.
Widder is still one of my favourites in Zurich however if I take the asking price into account I have to say that you can get better value elsewhere. I have noticed that the rooms are getting a bit old. The furniture is not in the best shape anymore and looks used. Also the fact that some rooms are very rustic and not to my taste at all makes this hotel a hit or miss. The service is still great though.

Room Tip: If you don't like stone floors, beams and girders ask for a more modern room.

We took 2 rooms for 2 nights. Our review is as follows:-

Firstly, the location - it is a great location . very central, convenient to shopping, restaurants and main train station. From the main train station to the hotel is about 5 to 10 minutes walk, with luggage.

Secondly, the hotel - It is a converted old building. I love the understated elegance. It is not opulent or loud or shiny. You can see that there is a lot of thought put in to restoring the old building. It is a mix of old and new. I love the quiet minimalism with quality furnishings and fixtures. Both our rooms are different in configuration eg) mine has a bathtub whereas the other room had a large shower but no tub. I love the Eames lounge chair, the B&O telly and player. The beds are remote controlled so it can be upright or 45 degrees. There is a telly in the toilet, built into the mirror as a single piece. There is a Nespresso machine in the room which provide unlimited coffee and expresso. Turn down service includes a small fruit by the bedside. Fantastic. Breakfast is of good quality. The staff (especially the young man) at the breakfast area are attentive, pleasant and friendly. The kitchen staff is also obliging with our quirky request like having our bacon grilled very crispy. The concierge is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Everything and everyone worked with Swiss precision.

I would like to make a small suggestion that if the owners do renovate or refurbish the rooms they might like to consider not to have split level floors in the rooms. This is because older/senior guest may trip over the split level floor.

I love this hotel. It is expensive but absolutely worth it.

Room Tip: If you have senior people travelling with you, you may want to consider rooms which have 1 level. Th...

This small luxury hotel has a interesting history as a conversion (over about 10 years) from multiple historic buildings connected together in old town Zurich. Our room was spacious and filled with beautiful furniture including Eames lounge chairs. Very friendly and attentive staff. Convenient to shopping, metro, and the main train station. Wonderful experience overall!

I stayed with the Widder Hotel in July 2013. It is a genuine world class hotel full of thoughtful surprises. The style is rich, authentic modern with eye catching details all around - it is a paradise for design-minded, splurge-willing, luxury-loving travelers. The staff is elegant yet friendly and the summer garden full of hydrangeas feels fresh and inviting. Strolling old town Zürich is easy from the Widder and I can't imagine any traveler who wouldn't fall in love with the surroundings. I had one very, very small suggestion at the end of my stay. I later received a beautiful overseas letter explaining the situation and stating they would make sure the small request was provided in-room when I visited next time. I am amazed by the gracious gesture and send my thanks to the staff of the Widder Hotel.

Room Tip: If you can splurge for a room with outdoor space, do. :)

The exterior is plain and the lobby underwhelming, but then there's the impeccable and genuinely friendly service, and the food (now by Dietmar Sawyer - Sydney's loss is very much Zurich's gain), and the excellent outdoor spaces, and the great bar, and the top location, and the comfortable rooms ...... Phew! All a bit too much. Like Zurich, the Widder rewards familiarity. The sort of hotel that every decent city needs. See for yourself.
