“Fine dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2014

There is no wondering why The Dolder Grand has been given it's Michelin stars it is fine dining! We were seated at an amazing table overlooking the city as the hotel is on a hill. The view was amazing! All 4 of us decided to order the 12 course dinner. Be warned, if you choose this course you will be at the restaurant for hours! We arrived at 7:30 & left at 1:30am! Everything was really, really good and we appreciated the chef adjusting the menu for our friends food allergies! Service was good although we did feel it could have moved along a wee bit quicker. There was one guy, I think he was the sommelier who was a bit snooty & not apologetic or accommodating when one of the bottles of wines he suggested for us was not to our taste other than that we had not complaints!

“Very avant-garde cuisine and close to 3 Michelin stars level”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

There are no 3 Michelin-star restaurants in Zürich, but one has to bear in mind the stringent criteria of the Michelin inspectors in Europe as they are very different from the absurd and ridiculous Michelin team in Hong Kong. We booked The Restaurant one month ahead and were warmly received by the manager and staff upon our arrival. They greeted us by our name and remembered clearly our dietary restriction. Chef Heiko Nieder’s cuisine focuses a lot on daring creativity, almost pushing to the limit of breaking the rules. Having dine with many French classical and modern 3 Michelin star chefs in France, I've rarely seen this kind of high level details being put into preparing each and every dish that came out from the kitchen. Chef Nieder executed every dish with absolute precision, discipline and displaying a high degree of technical skill. We experience many exceptional dishes throughout dinner. Who could imagine blending banana sorbet with mussels and sea urchin with mango?? Pre-dinner canapés and after dinner petit four were presented in the same consistency. The tasting menu specially highlighted the Chef’s area of expertise with légumes. Gambero rosso was delicious. White Alba truffles with Swiss mountain potato, spinach jelly and egg was exceptional. Deer with celery, coffee and cornelian cherry was very well cooked with a beautiful presentation of the "winter forest" inspired by the forest surroundings of the Dolder Grand. Clever play of different texture for dessert plum with cedrus wood, chocolate crispy, banyuls and spices. After dinner, we were invited to meet Chef Heiko Nieder in the kitchen and we thanked Chef and his team for their efforts in preparing our dinner. One thing to take note, the service team has to pace the tempo for the tasting menu in a timely manner, otherwise, a dinner close to 3.5 hours can a bit too much for many guests.

Best food in Zurich by far. 2 Mitchelin Stars. Excellent value for the buffet lunch if you like to dine like a VIP!

“No excuse for service & food quality at these prices. Not 5 star by a long shot.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

This place is downright dangerous, as another reviewer mentioned below.

I was here this week in the ballroom for a large special event. It cost hundreds of francs per person and the food was sub-par to say the least. Most important from my perspective, the kitchen and servers seem to have no grasp of food allergies whatsoever. One server actually told me to pick off the part I was allergic to and eat the rest of a dish -- advice that could easily land many a guest in the hospital!

The entire hotel from the valets in the parking who did not deliver our bags to our room until called a second time an hour later, to the concierge's desk, to the surly bar staff to the wait staff, were poorly trained and not even close to what you'd expect from a 5 star hotel that charges well over 500 chf per night.

As a business traveller staying in 5 star hotels all over the world, I'd recommend the management and staff of the Dolder visit a few good 5 star hotels to see how it's done. The food and service of this hotel are inexcusable. I cannot recommend this hotel for anything to anyone -- not even locals taking a guest up for the view. The service is that bad and the prices inflated unbelievably.

Dear Guest

Many thanks for your recent stay at the Hotel Dolder Waldhaus and your participation in an event at the Dolder Grand. We appreciate that you took the time to describe your experience in such a detailed way and would like to take this opportunity to respond to both of your reports on Tripadvisor.

First of all, we regret to read that we fell short of your expectations and wish to apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment that you encountered during your stay. In terms of your comment regarding the Hotel Dolder Waldhaus, we wish to mention that although the services and technical equipment mostly date back to the origin of the building (1975) they are well kept and maintained. Furthermore, the selection of dishes and the services offered in the restaurant are constantly being optimised and enhanced.

The organizer of the event at the Dolder Grand informed us beforehand of allergies or intolerances of the participants, wherefore we served you a special menu at the seated dinner in our Ballroom. Unfortunately, it was difficult to recognize the guests with food restrictions during the pre-dinner aperitif reception standing. Please rest assured that we take food allergies seriously and attach great importance to the continuous training of our staff in order to guarantee a cautious handling. The pictured proceeding of our wait staff represented an exception to the usual standard in reliability and your comment was reviewed with the employees involved, since it will enable us to offer better value and satisfaction.

We truly hope that this experience has not permanently marred your opinion about the Dolder Grand and would be delighted to welcoming you back to the Dolder Resort in the near future. Until then we wish you all the best.

Yours sincerely
