“Friendly and great location, excellent choice in Zurich altstadt”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2011

In a 16th century building, the Hotel Hirschen is an excellent place to stay in the altstadt of Zurich. The staff are friendly and obliging, offering a welcoming drink and plenty of advice. Our room was on the top-floor and complete with it's own rooftop terrace which was superb. The rooms are small - it's a historic hotel - but very clean and comfortable. Bathroom and other common areas of the hotel were spotlessly clean. The hotel has a wine cellar which is well worth a visit. We got there late but the staff happily delivered our order - a couple of local wines by the glass and an excellent meat and cheese platter - to our room and we could enjoy it on our personal terrace. Wi-fi access is included and you can't beat the location (however the noise from nearby bars on weekends may bother some).

My wife and I stayed at the Hirschen for two nights in July. Like all Swiss hotels, it's quite expensive. Its location is great, right in the old center of Zurich; 8-10 walk from the train station. The room was smaller than hotels in other Swiss cities (this is a VERY old building, though with modern fixtures/everything), but it was clean and comfortable. Breakfast buffet was average. Staff was very helpful, very friendly (e.g. willing to make reservations etc.). For the same money in almost any other country, of course, you'd have a much better hotel, and in Luzern and Lauterbrunnen, for about the same price, we had much nicer hotels. Still, the Hirschen has merit. Elevator, too.

Very nice hotel in the middle of Niederdorf. It is also very close to the trainstation.
You will find lots of eating out options around the hotel.
Rooms are clean and nicely furnished. I always book a grand lit room as you will have a larger bed.
Breakfast is nothing special to mention, average at best.
Very friendly ad helpful staff.

Extremely friendly and helpful service from check in to virtually insisting that they make us breakfast at 4.00am because we had to leave at 4.30am to catch a flight. Free wi fi adds to the service but it was a bit marginal reception in the room itself. The hotel has everything you need (other than airconditioned rooms) and is comfortable but not luxurious, we found the price to be as good as we could get on the day for such a central location. Would definately stay here again.

I stayed at Hotel Hirschen with my 2 teens for three nights.
Pros: hotel location, the desk staff, the wine cellar (ask for the Pinot Noir from Zurich region – a most unusual red, and certainly not a typical pinot!), the roof garden and breakfast.
Cons: No a/c, so we would have liked the window open, but the noise from the square too loud. Dishes clashing from 1:30am -2am added to sleeplessness – we were in room 401 which was an open stairway away from the desk area and breakfast room, so maybe higher floors would avoid this noise. Beds are VERY firm.

Special thanks to desk staff – they were very friendly and helpful. Advised us to buy Zurich Cards (http://www.zuerich.com/en/Visitor/Information/zuerich-card.html), which allowed us unlimited access to city transit and entry to many museums/churches/boat tour (includes train trip from airport, so buy your card as soon as you arrive). They also helped us to find a public swimming area; a fantastic place to spend a hot afternoon.

Room Tip: Stay on an upper floor - 5th or higher.

This is old, central and very cool. Most amazing it has an elevator that goes down (from every floor) to the wine cellar! It's in the center of the Alt Stadt, has a great breakfast, wonderful, helpful staff. And is surrounded by all sorts of places to eat. TIP. In Summer, ask for a room at the back. The square outside, while great to look at, stays noisy until at least 3a.m.
