As others have said, the view was beautiful. We went to the top on a hot, sunny day and we didn't our sweaters. The 2-car cog wheel train is very narrow and most seats couldn't comfortably fit 2 adults next to each other. We were on the train that left around 9:45 that was only half full and people could spread out. The next train, which we saw unload, was
full and the people looked like sardines. Also, because the crowd was smaller earlier it was easier to walk the paths and take pictures.
We stayed at the top an hour which was enough time to walk to the various points and take pictures. We were there the first week of September and walking on the trails and looking at marmots seemed to be the only things to do.
We bought a 5-day Golden Pass which gave us 2 days of unlimited travel and 3 half-price days. The price was 105 CHF. We used it on Lausanne to Montreux train, the cog wheel train to Rochers-de-Naye and back, bus from Montreux to Chateau de Chillon, and the CGN ferry from Chillon to Lausanne. (The second unlimited day we went on train from Lausanne to Nyon, ferry from Nyon to and from Yvoire, France, train from Nyon to Geneva, and train from Geneva to Lausanne.)
