This hotel surpassed my expectations in every respect - and how rare is that?
The location is superb - right by the beautiful lake with stunning views; one minute's walk from the Metro Ouchy which delivers you (free with card from the hotel) to Lausanne centre; three minutes' walk at most from the boat booking office. (Tip - get to the boat booking office in plenty of time, there are long queues of ditherers.)
The room was much larger than other European hotels which charge far more;
There was a bathtub, not just a tiny shower cubicle;
The windows opened - a small point? Not when the night is hot;
Thanks to a tip from TripAdvisor, I asked for a kettle to make our own early morning tea and this was no problem whatsoever;
Choice of pillows (they are in the closet) - how rare is that?
TV in room had English channels - this in the middle of Switzerland;
I asked for more towels - no problem whatsoever.
Housekeeping/cleanlinless - no problems whatsoever.
Towards the end of our stay I found out that there is a free internet computer for guests on the 1st floor (not advertised) - but the reception staff very obligingly answered all my questions on their own computer. I cannot comment on the wi-fi, because I go away to get away from all that.
There is no point in paying extra for a lake view room. How much time do people spend in their hotel bedrooms looking out at the view? We had a city-side room which was dark and quiet at night.
Breakfast and two evening meals in their restaurant were very good. Breakfast was included in the room rate with swift service of tea/coffee. The help-yourself buffet was absolutely fine. I have had far worse in more expensive hotels. Evening meals, both times, were delicious, beautifully presented and with excellent service. Yes, it is expensive, but so is eating out anywhere in that country.
There are plenty of other (decent) restaurants within walking distance; all about the same price but with much more street noise and over-stressed waiters.
At the Hotel du Port, they really work hard to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Every single member of staff we met was friendly and welcoming. I couldn't recommend this small, well-run, hotel more highly. There is absolutely no need to stay at any of the nearby double-the-price establishments. Save the money for very expensive food and drink, and stay here instead.
Room Tip: Don't bother booking a lake-side room; city-side is fine.
