“A fabulous little train ride”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

The great thing about this attraction is that you can watch live film footage of what the weather is like at the peak without having to buy a ticket first! If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, your ticket is half price. The trains are very regular, about every 20 minutes. They stop en route to the summit, so you may alight at any station, then get back on when you feel like it. Of course the summit is the main attraction with it's 360 degree views. There are also the almost obligatory tourist St Bernard dogs for a photo opportunity, but if you don't want your picture taken with them, the guys in charge of them are ok about you taking your own pictures of the dogs anyway. There is also a shop (with toilet facilities) which sells alcohol and coffee for drinking on premises. Plus a huge restaurant, which was full, so we didn't bother with that. Another shop with expensive clothes, and a chapel.

Very efficient way to travel. Trains incredibly clean and always on time!!!! Tickets very easy to purchase from both kiosks and booths and trains run every 20 mins.

“Cloudy in Zermatt, bright sunshine at Matterhorn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

The cog railway ascent was wonderful even though parts were shrouded in clouds. When we reached the summit, the view was outstanding and the Matterhorn was visible in all her glory. The view with the mountain soaring over the cloud cover was beautiful. Don't miss out on this excursion even if it is cloudy and overcast in Zermatt.

“Gornergrat: An Afternoon Walk from Riffelalp to Winkelmatten”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

One day we bought a one way ticket for the Gornergrat train from Zermatt to Riffelalp. It's located at about 2200m and contains a large resort. The way from the station to the resort is not far, but a nice red trolley does its way back and forth to bring visitors at the utmost comfort. The Riffelalp resort is a nice and colored place. After being there for a while, we took the path that goes down back to Zermatt via Winkelmatten. The way is not difficult, it winds inside a wood with a lot of flora. One or two sections turned out to be more steep but we managed. At mid way we found a tee house which also serves light meals. We had a tee and an Apfelshtrudel - the popular apple cake you find everywhere. The path enables nice views of the snowy mountains, which added interest to the trail. It took us about 3 hours - including the rest in the tee house. very reassuring walk, very much recommended.

“Amongst the best views in Alps”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

This is a must if you like stunning glacier views. We walked all the way up from Zermatt which took 4 & half hours, it is a big walk but well doable if you are reasonably fit. There are options to jump on the train at a number of stages on the way up, or you can get the train all the way up and have a wonder at the top. Either way it is well worth a visit. There is a restaurant and a cafe in the visitor centre. You need to check the weather forecast as always.
