“Cosy hotel with first class restaurant ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2014

Cosy hotel in excellent location for Klein Matterhorn ski area, could improve on service

On the bright side:
1)Excellent location for Matterhorn Express gondolas. Virtually one minute walk
2) top class gourmet restaurant: excellent dinner food and wine list
3) cosy rooms and lovely spa area with nice large swimming pools
4) very nice outside patio and smoking/game lounge

Negative points:
1) reception area a bit messy and not up to a 4star hotel
2) breakfast buffet and service could be improved
3) no room service and no evening bed turnover/cleaning service
4) staff ok but could be more helpful
5) the spa provides massages, but only one masseur so it's very difficuly to book a treatment - the SPA area is really beautiful but no staff is there to help

Dear Berghof visitor

Thank you very much for your review.

We are happy that you praise our location, kitchen, room, swimming pool, patio, smoking and game room.

Yes, we know, our front desk is a bit messy and we will improve it.

We will amend our breakfast buffet a bit each season. Perhaps, you have a good suggestion?

Yes, we have a room service, if you wish. You can call at the front desk and our staff will bring you breakfast, beverages or food.

We have an evening bed turnover/cleaning service, but if a dog is in the room, our staff doesn't enter the room. Next time you call us in the evening, when the dog is outside of the room and we will clean your room.

We are sorry, that our staff wasn't helpful.

We are a small hotel and we can't have more Spa staff. We will change a little bit the organisation.
We recommend you to pre-book a massage treatment before your arrival.

We would be pleased to welcome you again to our hotel.

Yours sincerely

The hotel Berghof staff

We went to Zermatt twice and stayed at Hotel Berghoff both times. We certainly plan to go back again. The most important criteria for us in choosing a ski hotel is 1. location (want to be as close as possible to the ski lifts) and 2. food (want to have gurme food in the evenings). Berghoff is just perfect for both. The food is really great with a different set menu every evening. On top of these, the family is very welcoming and you feel like you are staying at home and not at a hotel. If you are a crowded family, I suggest to take the duplex house. Then you really will think you are staying at a chalet with the convenience of the hotel. The hotel also has an indoor pool which we like.

Room Tip: If you are a crowded family, I suggest to take the duplex house. Then you really will think you are...

We were a family of four staying in a Zermatt apartment and desperate for a swim. The tourist office has a list of hotels whose pools are open to non residents and Berghof seemed the most reasonably priced. Sauna etc only open from 4pm but well worth it-two pools with jacuzzi areas, steam room, sauna, tropical showers and chill-out area overlooking the Matterhorn.

We were recommended to the Hotel Berghof by the Hotel Matterhorn Focus, as they were full for one day of our stay in Zermatt. The management of the Focus could not say enough nice things about the Berghof, althoug I believe there is no common ownership. We understood quickly why all the compliments were given.

The Berghof staff came to the Focus to pick up our luggage while we skied for the day. When we arrived at the Berghof we a ski locker waiting for us. There is an adjacent boot warmer that was very welcome after a snowy day.

The Berghof is a traditional Zermatt hotel. Beautiful wood everywhere. A wonderful restaurant for breakfast and dinner. A beautiful spa with two pools. Very helpful staff. The room was very quiet with a large bathroom and very nice beds.

Our last day we skied all day and we were planning to depart Zermatt in the evening. The staff suggested that they store our bags and recommended that we pack a small bag so we could shower and use the spa after skiing and then change in to our travel clothes. That was so helpful!

The Berghof is located just 20 steps above the Matterhorn tram and gondolas. There is a ski rental shop nearby as well. If you are a skier you will very much appreciate the Berghof location.

Room Tip: Matterhorn view is a plus

The popular quote does summarize the essence of this hotel. The owner family and the entire staff do everything to make you feel at home. Last time that I was able to appreciate such a high level of hospitality was in Asia. It would however be great for other (unfortunately many) Swiss hotels to take example on the Berghof experience.

The hotel is superbly located for skiers, just a few meters from the matterhorn glacier paradise lifts. It is a 10 minutes walk to the town center, but then, you are on holidays, and without the noise and the smell of car exhausts, walking is a great experience.

The hotel has all the facilities you would expect from a 4* hotel, the food is very good; the wellness area has been extended with a wonderful swimming pool. Hotel prizes are ok, remember that you are in Switzerland in general, and in Zermatt in particular.

To conclude, I highly recommend this hotel, a true gem I will surely visit again.

Recently spent a weekend in Zermatt for an early pre-season ski. I have been to Zermatt many times, but this was my first stay at the Berghof, and it won't be the last. Yes, the location is unparalleled - right next to the Gondola station. Yes, this is a little ways from town, but a nice walk. The hotel itself is lovely, feels very Chalet like without being kitchy. The rooms were a generous size. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Will definitely be coming back. And hey, if it's good enough for the swiss ski team, who we missed by a day, then it's good enough for me.

Zermatt is chic and expensive and with good reason - it provides some of the best skiing in Europe. (If you want to enjoy its pleasures at budget price, stay in Cervinia in Italy and buy an international ski pass. But, if you do, keep a watchful eye on the weather forecast as the Theodul pass will close in bad weather and you will face a huge taxi bill back to the Italian side). But, as a result and rather like the Trois Vallees, Zermatt has become a little self satisfied. This was our fourth trip to Zermatt in the last six years and, while we love the location, we have found the hotels to be rather unfriendly in their service and general attitude towards their clientele.

Not so the Hotel Berghof. In fact it is so good that I did consider not posting this report in case the place becomes too popular as a result. My wife declared it the best ski hotel we have ever stayed in (and that is many). It feels more like home than an hotel with friendly but unobtrusive service, and comfortable spacious rooms with magical, glorious views of the Matterhorn. Dinner is superb. The new spa and pool should win a design award. Breakfast is perhaps rather limited and the ski room somewhat cramped but these are minor criticisms.

Don't stay there if you are one of the skiing in-crowd and want to see and be seen.
Don't stay there if you want to be in the centre of the apres ski night life - as other reviewers have pointed out it is not in the centre of town.
Don't stay there if you want a huge dining choice - there are only two choices of main course at dinner but both were cooked superbly every night we were there.
Don't stay there if you want to meet up with other English speakers - you will be lucky (or perhaps unlucky) to hear another English voice.

Perhaps the greatest praise came from our daughters who are very much into the apres ski scene - 'We really did not want to go out on an evening'.

Room Tip: Choose to go in one of their Winter Ski weeks to make the package a little more affordable.
