“Very educational”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

This was one of my favorite spots in Zermatt, but then again I like learning about the history of where I am. I learned a lot about Edward Whymper and the first successful summit of the Matterhorn. I loved it so much that I am now reading his book Scrambles Amongst the Alps. He's an amazing writer and gives you an idea of what it was like to be a pioneer trying to conquer the mountains.

The museum is very informative but in a laid back way. You could spend 15 minutes here or 2 hours, just kind of depends on the mood you're in. I personally preferred it on a nice sunny day....not as many people crowding it up!

“Most interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

Another must do in zermatt. A better one to save for a rainy day when you cant go up the mountains, you will spend ages in there just absorbing all the info, history etc from zermatts start in tourism onwards to the present day. Fascinating and very enjoyable.

“A pleasant surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013 via mobile

Looking at the museum from outside, a modern small glass building in the middle of the village, you certainly don't expect much. I was very pleasantly surprised, the museum is actually very interesting. Down bellow, there is a huge space where Zermatt in the 19th century is featured, with old houses and chalets, not fakes, real ones. This gives a very good idea of what life was in Zermatt pre-tourism times. The is a very interesting section on the Matterhorn climbing history and a film theatre that gives you goosebumps looking at some of old times climbing adventurers. Really worth a visit!

“This might interest a history buff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

Since our Swiss Pass covered this museum and we had an hour to spare in Zermatt after coming back from Kleine Matterhorn, we decided to give it a shot.

It was quite interesting really, but focusing quite a bit on the history of the town. The place that I spent the most time was the wall of Matterhorn-related items, including chocolate packaging, etc.

Worth a look if it was free (the normal entry fee was 10CHF).

“a rainy day adventure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

This museum is really neat. It has lots of displays on what the area was like back as far as 1600s. It took a good two hours to go through it including a great movie on The Matterhorn.
