“Comfortable Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

The hotel is split into several buildings. We are on the first floor with a view of the Matterhorn from our balcony.

The room is very comfortable with separate bath and sitting rooms. Dinner and breakfast were both good quality and plenty of it.

There is a large building being built next door. This may block the view of the Matterhorn.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that has a view of the Matterhorn from the balcony.

Bang in the middle of Zermatt, most welcome after a long walk to reach it up the valley. Very friendly welcome and no fuss about heavy boots, rucksack or the trail weary Englishman.

I would certainly return (and hope to). Great value.

Nice balconies on one side of the building with views of the village church and the unrivalled Matterhorn.

Also a super breakfast (unexpected after some in Suisse) - great selection and further happy service.

This place is well-located and easy to find from the station and to walk to other places in Zermatt. The owners were very friendly and offered helpful advice on what to do in Zermatt. I stayed in a single room with shared bathroom. The room was simply furnished but clean and the cable TV had many channels. Like many places, the noiseproofing wasn't the best - lots of creaky stairs and thin walls. My room was on the top floor and from the window I could see the Matterhorn poking above the buildings - can't complain about that! The toilet and shower/bath was halfway down a flight of stairs - it was clean but it was one of those showerheads that you have to hold while you shower. I'm not sure how many rooms I was sharing the bathroom with but I never had to wait. Breakfast was included and there was a decent variety of cereals, bread, meats and cheeses. I was pretty happy with Alpina Hotel for the price and location.

Room Tip: Rooms facing south have a Matterhorn view and catch the sun in winter.

Hotel Alpina, well, what a fantastic hotel! I have nothing bad to say about the place. The hosts were wonderful (even with a rather sick 4 year old!) the breakfast was lovely, the rooms were very clean and the bed very comfortable. We had great views from the room of the mountains all around. It's in a wonderful location only having to walk about 5 minutes (if that) to the town for dinner or shopping.

Our family was split into two rooms and both had great views and a balcony, tv (with English channels, BBC 1,2 itv, channel 4, film 4, cbeebies, CBBC etc) and hair dryers.

I read another review saying that they had to wait for the lift and they had to still take the cases up some stairs. I stayed when it was very busy and I never had to wait for the lift. You did have to take the cases up some stairs but it was literally four small steps.

There was a boot room and ski room which was great. Had such a lovely time when staying there. The hosts I really can't thank enough they were friendly, helpful and very welcoming. Considering this is one of the cheaper hotels in Zermatt it's absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to go back!

Very cute, clean (well up to swiss standards!), cozy little hotel. Great central location so you can walk everywhere easily, nice breakfast, friendly host. Our room was great! Given the price I was not expecting very much but was really pleasantly surprised. Saved so much money staying here. Would definitely go back or recommend to others.

Hotel Alpina is centrally located but quiet at the same time. So if you want to go for dinner or drinks in the evening, it is literally just a two-minute stroll and you don't need the expensive Electrotaxis.

The breakfast is very good, and you can request extra eggs at a small fee.

The rooms are totally fine - nothing outstanding, but a decent bed and bathroom.

There is a quite cool retro-50's-style lobby room on the reception floor. Almost a trip back in time with books - and daily newspapers! Great service! You can also sit outside in the garden.

But the best of it all is really the hospitality. You feel welcome from the first minute, they are very friendly, they even kept the breakfast open for us and even replenished as we were a bit late - certainly not a given everywhere in Switzerland!

So if you are looking for a down-to-earth and welcoming place to stay in Zermatt, Hotel Alpina is warmly recommended.

I think August is a very popular vacation season, and this was the cheapest hotel I could find on some booking website, so I didn't really have a high expectation of the hotel.
However, when I arrived, it turned out to be just right, if not perfect.
The breakfast room is very nice, decorated with pictures Zermatt and pictures of the owners of this hotel (which, I remember, is about over 100 years old). It makes you feel having breakfast at home.
The room is not very big, but big enough. The bath room has a bathtub, and it is quite big compared with the price...haha I guess it is designed for cleaning the skiing equipments, maybe, cause you need room to move around with that big stuff.
The introduction leavelet in room is very informative, I enjoy reading the stories before sleep. The stuff is very friendly as well.
When we came back with fruit, they gave me plates, knives, spoons to enjoy my fruit in the room. They even asked me if I wanted some hot water, very considerate!:)
