My Son and I have just returned from a superb week of Skiing in Zermatt.
I have been to Zermatt on several occasions and it is one of my favouirite Ski resorts,
It's smart, (without being snobbish), equipped with every amenity and has an excellent Lift System with almost no queues.
My review however is about the 'Hotel Rex Garni' a wonderful family run Hotel, just 5 minutes walk from the Town Centre and 2 minutes from the Bus Stop, this being, in my opinion the most important thing to check when booking a Ski Hotel...'How close is it to the Bus Stop ?'
It's all very nice booking a Hotel close to a lift, but in reality, quite often you may not want that particluar lift in the Morning, being close to a Bus Stop saves lots of walking !
The welcome when we arrived at the Hotel was fantastic, we were immediately made to feel like wanted and valued guests.
Our room was lovely, immaculately clean and large by European Standards, even having a seperate sitting area with two big comfy chairs, flat TV and Mini Bar.
The Bathroom was modern, well fitted and...importantly..the Shower was very powerful and there was plenty of Hot water, some Hotels fail in this regard, Often when everyone in a Hotel is using the hot water, it can run out...this never happened at the Rex.
There is a good ski room with plenty of heated racks to store your ski boots, which were always warm and dry when we came to put them on in the morning.
The Pool and Sauna area is outstanding, possibly the best I have encountered, certainly the best maintained. I assumed it was brand new, but was told by the manager it is several years old, incredible !
The swimming pool is a nice size and the water seems very clean, there are two Saunas' one very hot, one less so to suit personal taste.
The Breakfast room was, again, spotless and tasteful, Breakfast being a fairly simple affair, but with plenty of food and really excellent Coffee. It suited us perfectly.
This Hotel is unusual in not having a Dinner Restaurant, it's strictly Bed and Breakfast, but don't let that put you off, this is not a Bed and Breakfast in the British sense, it's still a 4 star Hotel, but this gives you the opportunity to eat out in Zermatt.
We ate at a different restaurant every night ranging from expensive smart restaurants to simpler cheaper affairs and never had anything but an excellent meal.
In conclusion, I couldn't recommend this Hotel and Zermatt highly enough, both are superb. Neither are the cheapest, but they are excellent value and top quality and let's face it when you arrive on Holiday, you never think 'wow I saved some money' all you think is either 'this is wonderful' or 'I wish I was somewhere better'
I am sure that in the Hotel Rex you WILL think 'This is wonderful' !
I imagine all the rooms are pretty good.. A Matterhorn view is very nice.
