“Small Boutique, Rusticly Chic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

Positives:
Great customer service from hotel staff. Excellent lounge and sitting area with fire place and bar. Excellent location of hotel directly across the street from the central train station. However, Zermatt is a logistical nightmare. It takes about an hour to get to and up the mountain to ski. I wore gym shoes to walk to mountain transportation and did not put ski boots on until I reached the mountain top to ski. There are no lockers, so I skied with my gym shoes in my back pack. The views of the Matterhorn and surrounding mountains are so beautiful, so I guess it was worth it in the end.
The hotel has a fantastic morning breakfast buffet (loaded with eggs, sausage, bacon, champagne, orange juice, fruits, cold cuts, teas, breads, etc). Very worth the fee if your a breakfast eater.
Negatives:
No refreshment refrigerator in the room and when they require you to stay for a full week, this is difficult when traveling with small children. We used the outside balcony as a refrigerator.
Another negative was the low quality of the soaps & shampoos provided.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 300, although most of the hotel was recently renovated, this room was not. The wo...

We recently stayed at the Alex Schlosshotel - excellent service and excellent location for skiing in Zermatt. The complete renovation of the hotel has resulted in supeprb accommodation allied with great spa facilities including a popular pool, sauna and steamroom and a warm welcome.

Rooms have been completely refurbished since our last visit. Lovely new bar with open fire in the evenings. The service at the hotel is excellent - great breakfast, but dinner is not offered. The in-house taxi provides transfers to and from the local station for luggage - although it is but a stone's throw away fromt he hotel. Great help and advice from the hotel staff for restaurants, ski info and in dealing with a medical emergency etc.

The Gornergrad railway to the ski region is maximum 5 minutes walk away, even with ski boots. The Sonnegger ski area is a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel. All the ski regions in Zermatt are linked so once in the mountains it is easy to move between parts of this huge ski area.

The hotel is well placed for shops, restaurants and bars but located in a quiet area.

All in all - a superb base for a family ski holiday.

Alex Schlosshotel manages to quite nicely bypass outdated hotel by sticking with 'traditionally swiss' - the building is not as old as they make it look (by having used very old wood in some parts of the building to create the patina).

We booked a double room + extra bed for our daughter who was only staying one night - and had our room upgraded - which was a wonderful surprise. We were due to check out on the 31st - but asked and asked for a room for the New Years Eve night with no luck until the very last minute, there was a cancellation (but we did have to change rooms).

Zermatt is an exceptionally fun place for NYE. Be SURE to book somewhere for dinner, or be happy with McDonalds (whatever you do stay away from the English Pub). The NYE street party is really lovely - and so worth doing once in your life.

Room Tip: Upgrade if you can!

Warm welcome and continued hospitality throughout our stay. Sadly, we only were able to stay in Zermatt for one day which made finding a hotel VERY difficult. Alex Schlosshotel was one of our only options for a one night stay. The staff really helped us to make the most of our stay. They were incredibly hospitable from the moment we checked in, until we checked out, even offering to store our things after checking out of our room until we planned to leave Zermatt later that evening and offering their spa to us for the day. This hotel is a little outdated per larger city standards but it was welcomed because it added to the small town feel of the resort town. We were given great recommendations for local activities/restaurants and had an amazing (included) breakfast before hitting the mountain for a day of skiing. I highly recommend this hotel!
