“A fun excursion if slightly overpriced (for the ice palace)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

It is a pretty high mountain - remember, you could only go up in the gondola to Kleine Matterhorn, and SEE The Matterhorn on the opposite side. It was a great view and the vantage points had lots to offer.

The ice palace was fun, if a little overpriced at 8CHF extra. The ice sculptures and other installations were interesting.

Tip: Do not move too fast at this high altitude - or else you might feel sick and nauseated.

“Wow!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

Another expensive but well worth it trip out from Zermatt. You take a small cable car ¾ of the way up and then change to a large cablecar for the final decent. We were able to have a small car to ourselves which was brilliant as the view constantly changes and its good to move around inside the car. It is very smooth and quiet and it is possible to get out at any of the stations but I would recommend doing that on the decent. If you can see that the Matterhorn is clear, get up there asap! The big cable car was quite full with many skiers and is a real experience as you travel above the snow. At the top there is a lot to do with a viewing platform, viewing windows, glacier ice palace and restaurant etc. It is also fun watching the many skiers around and the walkers/ climbers ascending the nearby Breithorn peak. It is a lot colder up here so dress accordingly. It was 26° in Zermatt and minus 5° at the top. The cablecar station is about 15mins walk from the centre of Zermatt.

“Exhilarating ride up and awe-inspiring views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Like others, we struggled between the choice of the Glacier paradise and the Gornergrat Bahn. We only had one day in Zermatt. The choice was really made by the prospect of a cable car ride, seeing snow in early summer and the promise of spectacular views. All of these were met in abundance by this trip.
The cable car station is about 40 mins brisk walk from the arriving train station in Zermatt. There is supposedly a connecting bus, but we didn't find out about this till later. Nonetheless, the walk through Zermatt is relaxing. The price of the ride is eye-wateringly expensive, if you don't have half-price concessions. The ride starts gently to the first station, where you change to a second cable car. The cars are spacious and weren't crowded when we joined early in the morning. The views from the second station onwards are spectacular, as the cars rise over sheer rock faces and vertiginous ridges. The second station boasts a cafe, where you can sit and sip a cafe whilst gazing at the famous silhouette of the Matterhorn.
The third and final station marks the Glacier Palace and viewpoint. Once arriving, you realise it's very cold (even in early summer). The main attractions are the underground Glacier Palace - which is really like a walk down an underground ice tunnel, lit dimly by underground lights. The highlight for children is an icy tunnel slide. Once back up at the station again, head for the outside ski trail (closed when we were there), the shop and cafe, or the panoramic view station several flights up (reached by by lift from the station, or stairs from the start of the ski area) which gives you a 360 glimpse of the heavenly peaks.
There are some caveats. Good weather is important - otherwise the main reason for going up are lost. The top station is freezingly cold, and other than the (relatively small) cafe and shop, there is nowhere sheltered to sit and rest, other than in the cold dark tunnels of the station. The altitude at 3800 m is taxing. After relatively minor exertion, you can be significantly breathless. After spending one hour at this height, we were suffering somewhat from mild altitude sickness; some of us worse than others. Because of this, we stayed for less time than we expected. Bring sunblock - the sun is intense at this altitude.
Nonetheless, the trip up was an adventure of a lifetime. For those who aren't lucky enough to live near alpine ski resorts, this excursion is highly recommended.
