This hotel fully deserves its excellent rating on trip advisor. It's a charming building staffed by people who enjoy making people welcome and giving them good service. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from Zermatt station. The hotel provides a courtesy van for transfers to and from the station. The cheerful manner of the driver who collected us, was the first to make a good impression. (Call from the station to the hotel from the free phone located near the tourist information office).
Our room, on the top floor, overlooked the snow covered rooftops at the Matterhorn. There was ample space with a mezzanine floor, with two single beds, as well as the double below. The layout and facilities were good. The room was not overheated, but if you wanted it cooler, you could open the windows. As is usual in Europe, the shower was over the bath.
The hotel served a good buffet breakfast. We also dined in one of the two restaurants on all 3 nights of our stay as the range of food and atmosphere encouraged us to come back for more.
We were told that the hotel has been in the same family since the late 19th century. The owner made a point of talking to each guest in the dining room, at least once a day. Many of the staff had been there for several years. They spoke competently in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
The hotel is a 5 floor ski chalet with a spa and wellness facilities in the basement. The decor features historic photos and artifacts of the area. Above ground floor the ceilings are very low and the corridors wander about a bit, but this adds to the charm of the building.
The rates were in the range associated with a good Swiss hotel, that is, not cheap, but good value in that market.
We agree with the other reviewers that the wifi was rather slow, but that was the only short coming (and it was free).
We would certainly stay there again if we return to Zermatt. It merits 4 stars. Highly recommended.
