“Charming hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013 via mobile

This hotel fully deserves its excellent rating on trip advisor. It's a charming building staffed by people who enjoy making people welcome and giving them good service. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from Zermatt station. The hotel provides a courtesy van for transfers to and from the station. The cheerful manner of the driver who collected us, was the first to make a good impression. (Call from the station to the hotel from the free phone located near the tourist information office).

Our room, on the top floor, overlooked the snow covered rooftops at the Matterhorn. There was ample space with a mezzanine floor, with two single beds, as well as the double below. The layout and facilities were good. The room was not overheated, but if you wanted it cooler, you could open the windows. As is usual in Europe, the shower was over the bath.

The hotel served a good buffet breakfast. We also dined in one of the two restaurants on all 3 nights of our stay as the range of food and atmosphere encouraged us to come back for more.

We were told that the hotel has been in the same family since the late 19th century. The owner made a point of talking to each guest in the dining room, at least once a day. Many of the staff had been there for several years. They spoke competently in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

The hotel is a 5 floor ski chalet with a spa and wellness facilities in the basement. The decor features historic photos and artifacts of the area. Above ground floor the ceilings are very low and the corridors wander about a bit, but this adds to the charm of the building.

The rates were in the range associated with a good Swiss hotel, that is, not cheap, but good value in that market.

We agree with the other reviewers that the wifi was rather slow, but that was the only short coming (and it was free).

We would certainly stay there again if we return to Zermatt. It merits 4 stars. Highly recommended.

Excellent:
- location (right on the main street, some 200 m walk to the nearest ski lift)
- staff (very helpful and always nice)
- dinner in the main restaurant (tartar steak, lamb fillet - mmm)
- Zermatt in general - a real skier's paradise once you can afford it (prices impress even a muscovite)))

Good:
- room(s) - spacious, with comfortable beds. Though if you are taller than 1,90 m or so - beware of low ceilings and get prepared to take shower in the sitting position - the hotel building is quite old and historic.
- smaller restaurant (Stube). Food OK, though meat fondue at CHF 42/person is a bit disappointing.

Poor:
- breakfast (unappetizing and always the same, scrambled eggs and coffee from the machine is a real disaster(((

In any case, if breakfast and fondue is not what brings you to Zermatt, you will love the hotel like I did.

I spent one week in this hotel. Location is excellent as close to the main train station and shops on the main road. As I bought a half-board package via travel agent, I was very well fed. Breakfast was buffet and quality was OK. The daily set dinner came as a 5 course meal - appetisers x 2 (such as salad, soup or pastry), main course, cheese & dessert. You will love it if you love cheese, like to explore Swiss food or a huge eater! The restaurant can get a little bit busy that you feel neglected by the catering staff. The room is clean and spacious with a big bathroom - separate bath tub and shower cubicle! The decoration of the hotel is cosy and cute!

Only stayed one night, could easily have stayed longer, only was booked on the "Glacier Express" which leaves just 200 yards from this hotel. An ideal base for all the Swiss tourist trains including the Gornergrat Bahn.
Very friendly welcome, lovely large room with view of the Matterhorn (what more could you wish for), always warm and welcoming despite -18 outside! Had a "special" lunch for CHF25 which was good with quick service, important if catching the Gornergrat.
Would recommend to all - top tip go in winter the snow transforms this beautiful area.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back overlook the Matterhorn

Nice hotel on Bahnhofstrasse, very close to the main railway station and terminal of Gornergrat train. Very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel has two nice restaurants, the finer one and the "Stube" where you can get fondue and raclette. Someone complained in a review about the smell at the entrance of restaurants. I would not - it is from the cheese! Rooms are plain but clean. Beds are comfortable. The only reason to not give "Excellent" and 5 out of 5 are the poorly performing wifi and the quality of coffee at breakfast - from Nescafe machine.

We stayed two nights in this hotel in early September. This is a smaller hotel with modern and clean rooms. The bathrooms are well lit and super clean. We had a delicious dinner there, and the breakfast was excellent. This place is close to everything, and quite nice.
